I know a waitress in Georgia who quit teaching because she makes a lot more money working in a small family owned Southern style restaurant in downtown my home in Georgia. She only works from 7 to 3, usually 5 days a week.

Considering the extremely high cost of living in NYC, those salaries suck too. Point being that teachers are vastly underpaid, especially with all they have to deal with these days. Even a subsidized one bedroom apartment in NYC is about 2300 per month, based on my recent reading.'' Most people pay over 3K a month for rent and a lot have to have a roommate to survive.
Of course what OK is trying to force on its teachers and students is Orwellian, but the salaries compared to the lower cost of living in a state like OK aren't really out of line compared to other states. Of course teachers do get a lot more time off compared to other professions....My sister used to want to teach for that reason, but she couldn't handle it after getting her degree in teaching, so maybe the extra time off is needed.
