The ban comes just two days after the only black driver in the league's top series called on NASCAR to make the change.

NASCAR announced on Wednesday it would ban Confederate flags from its events, two days after the only black driver in the league's top series called on NASCAR to make the change.

The flag will no longer be allowed at races or displayed at any NASCAR properties, the league said in a statement posted to its Twitter account.

"The presence of the confederate flag at NASCAR events runs contrary to our commitment to providing a welcoming and inclusive environment for all fans, our competitors, and our industry," the statement said.

Some years ago, a major country music festival here in Arizona banned the Confederate flag. Some people complained, but in the end it wasn't a big deal. The few people who showed up flying the flag on their truck or wearing it on their person were turned away. I suspect it won't be a big deal for NASCAR at the end of the day.

I dunno. That was years ago. They're primed for a fight, now, just looking for any oppression. Unironically...

I know right? They go to all this trouble of keeping their 'second place' ribbons from the civil war and have nowhere to show them off.

Though we have what amounts to National Confederate cemeteries, though organized by private groups...

At some point, we decided that the CW wasn't a traitorous rebellion to serve immoral ends, it was a noble struggle of idealism against overwhelming odds. The North joined this view for several generations.

But those time are a-changing'

Classic overreaction and overcorrection.

The confederate battle flag has been a symbol of racism for 150+ years. Most places of business don't allow symbols of racial hate to be displayed.

Really.

BTW, it's also a symbol of treason against the USA. Odd how NASCAR events also begin with the national anthem. Almost as if patriotism is one of their values.

They're allowing kneeling during anthem too. Feel bad for all the Johnny rebs out there, things are closing in on them, where will they go now to celebrate their valiant defeat? It's almost like everyone is kneeling on them and keeping them down.

Just curious, but is it true that Karl Marx and other socialists put enough pressure on their various European governments to stop many of them recognizing the Confederacy?

Oh, let's just ban a symbol of racist oppression and terrorism. Let's not actually do anything real to stop it. This concession by NASCAR is like a microcosm of white conservative reaction to President Obama. Look, racism is over! We did our part. Nothing else to see here.

To be fair, the confederate flag isn't really a symbol of terrorism. In the civil war it was primarily the Union forces, Sherman's in particular, who are known for targeting civilians directly. If anyone were terrorists it was the Union, the Confederacy less so. Of course, the rhetoric on both sides was pretty vicious. Both spoke of burning their opponent's cities to the ground.

Then again, it was systemic terror that kept the black slaves enslaved. So I guess I could see it your way too.

It was if you were black.

It's highly dubious that any such pressure was needed, and even more doubtful that it would have been effective.

The British had sound reasons not to recognise the CSA, in particular the risk that such recognition would pose of sparking an invasion of Canada by the US. The French had more reason to support the CSA, in particular with regard to French ambitions in Mexico; But Napoleon III was dissuaded from formally recognising the CSA by Prussia and Britain. He wasn't inclined to listen to socialists, even if they were asking him to do what he already wanted to do.

Ultimately none of the European powers recognised the CSA, and all (at the time) staunchly resisted socialism and even the milder demands of the likes of Marx and Engels, so socialists were completely irrelevant to their decisions in this regard.

So I would strongly suggest that this idea is utter and abject bullshit that could only be contemplated even briefly by someone who had no understanding of the thoughts, actions, and political beliefs of the people in power in Europe at the time. A uniquely American view of what socialism actually is, and of how it stands in opposition to American ideals of a century later, and therefore of how insignificant it was in the 1860s Century, would probably also be required in order not to laugh this idea out of town.

If it would be a big negative deal for NASCAR, they wouldn't do it.

Well, with the XFL II out again, this time because of pandemic... Vince McMahon can launch a far right-wing stock car racing series. No kneeling, no politics (unless it is very conservative), no safety equipment, every car can have a Confederate Battle flag on it... must be on it! And the flag must be the most prominent car detail.

He can air it on OAN and call it the Big Dixie Series.

NASCAR is desperate. Their racing brand is crap as they have tech'd out for an oval racing serious. The cars can't get much faster without compromising safety, which means passing is a problem, and NASCAR has had to move to gimmicks such as staged racing and a playoff series to make things more "interesting". On top of that, racing has gotten way too expensive. And the only guys that win in NASCAR are former open wheel drivers, you know, real race car drivers. So NASCAR is desperate for mainstream money and fans.
