National Republicans sue California to block mail-ballot November election
The Republican Party has thrown its full weight behind challenging California’s move to a mail-ballot November election during the coronavirus pandemic.

A lawsuit from the Republican National Committee, the National Republican Congressional Committee and the California Republican Party seeks to invalidate Gov. Gavin Newsom’s order that county election officials mail every registered California voter a ballot. While Newsom and California election overseers have said the switch is necessary to balance public health with civic participation, opponents argue that Newsom has overstepped his authority.

The lawsuit argues that Newsom exceeded the limits of his powers by not seeking the consent of the state Legislature, accusing him of a “brazen power grab” that “was not authorized by state law” and transgressing the Constitution.
Are all executive orders "power grabs"? Or only the ones that they don't like?

Calling it a "brazen power grab" indicates that they know they don't have majority support, and are themselves trying to cheat their way into power.

On the other hand, I've yet to hear anyone really address the legal concerns involved? Does the governor, in fact, have the authority to do this unilaterally?

This is the critical key... which is why this stuff needed to start back in March. This stuff has to be legal, 100%, unimpeachable (if you will). Otherwise, the GOP is going to rape the 2020 election in December when the electors get counted, contest the election and go to the states. The GOP is on target to make 2000 look like a a friendly tete-a-tete over a single ballot.

That seems a bit over the top. I mean it's not like Republicans give a shit about following the law for it's own sake, and they hate Newsom anyway so it's not as though he's losing support with them or something.

I wish it were over the top. This is the EXACT argument they'll use in December to contest the election, because some states overstepped legal bounds in providing more people access to the ballot than legally allowed via the mail. They pulled this in Wisconsin, in the Pandemic.
