Who could be the next up and comers for presidential nominees in 2020 or 2024?

Jennifer Granholm comes to mind.

Mark Cuban? A bit less likely and would have a hard time after all the hay Hillary supporters made of Trump just being a business man with no political experience.

Considering the shake-up Trump is making in the Republican party, could their choices become more liberal or even more conservative?

Thoughts?

It's a bit depressing to discuss the next elections when current ones are not over. It's as if you accept that next 4 (or 8) years are lost already.
Anyway, assuming Hillary wins and lives through first term, Tim Kaine would be an obvious contender too. In fact I hope he would be Hillary's "Dick Cheney" in the first term.

By the way, proper tittle for the thread is "US President 2020 - the Great Horse Race" :)

Please, no more Clintons, no more Bushes, and certainly no more Trumps. One Trump is way more than enough.

Mark Cuban.

Jennifer Granholm isn't eligible, for the same reason as Arnold Schwarzenegger. Neither are natural born U.S. citizens.

Didn't know that. Damn, and she was my governor for a while. I thought she did a good job. Not to mention she's easy on the eyes.

ETA: Looked her up on wiki. She's from Canuckistan. No wonder I liked her. Most everybody I know from there is pretty level-headed and easy going.

Da fuck? What, are you guys bored of this election already? You're so hopped up on sugary drinks and snacks that you can't keep your attention on something for two years and you start to get distracted and lose focus after a mere one year and ten months and want something new to entertain you?

This is is why your country can't have nice things like universal health care or a month without a mass shooting.

I'd like to see a law that says anyone with a net worth of more than $5m cannot run for president.
There are thousands of great people who could do a better job than most recent presidents

Ann Coulter will be inspired by Trump to run for president.

Millions, not thousands. And rich people don't usually run for president, they simply buy one.

You are absolutely right.

Well that's true. It will be a lottery but the odds are still much better I'd imagine. It should open up the pool.

We have to get an early start on hearing the made-up controversies and the talking points defending against the made-up controversies, for example, like that Chelsea Clinton isn't really Bill's daughter.

If Clinton wins, she will run for re-election most likely in 2020.

Cruz will run for sure. The GOP clown car will load up with the usual suspects.

For future Democratic candidates, I cannot think of many who would run. Biden was born in 1942, so he'd be 78. The desire for many Americans to turn to progressive politics may propel some progressive Democrats to run, but I don't know who that would be. If Hillary runs for re-election, some progressive candidates may run in 2020, but mainly to build nationwide name recognition for 2024.

Why the obsession with Biden? If he wanted to run, he'd have run this year, and even this year he was way too old.

I really hope Democrats do not go all "progressive" (code word for "very left wing") in the future. One crazy major party is enough. I think that what the Dems choose to do with DAPL will speak volumes about the future direction of the party. Will Obama and Hillary cave to the crazy fringe of Indian activists and ecomenatlists or will they allow this sensible and important project to get done.

It would need to be adjusted for inflation. If teh Donald wins, everyone's going to be a billionaire anyhow, so the new threshold will have to be say, 10 billion.

I'll attempt to predict with the help of previous elections.

On the Democratic side, if Hillary Clinton does well enough, then she is likely to run for re-election, and the Democratic primaries will likely be a coronation for her. Here are the candidates in order of withdrawal from the race, starting with the one who stayed in.

In 2008:
Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton, John Edwards, Bill Richardson, Dennis Kucinich, Joe Biden, Mike Gravel, Christopher Dodd, Evan Bayh, Tom Vilsack

In 2012:
Barack Obama (essentially unopposed)

In 2016:
Hillary Clinton, Bernie Sanders, Martin O'Malley, Lawrence Lessig, Lincoln Chafee, Jim Webb

If 2020 is not a Hillary Clinton coronation, then I expect some new contenders to emerge.

The Republican side has been a much more wide-open race:

In 2008:
John McCain, Mitt Romney, Mike Huckabee, Ron Paul, Rudy Giuliani, Fred Thompson, Alan Keyes, Duncan Hunter, Tom Tancredo, Sam Brownback, Tommy Thompson, Jim Gilmore

In 2012:
Mitt Romney, Ron Paul, Fred Karger, Newt Gingrich, Rick Santorum, Buddy Roemer, Rick Perry, Jon Huntsman, Jr., Michele Bachmann, Gary Johnson, Herman Cain, Thaddeus McCotter, Tim Pawlenty

In 2016:
Donald Trump, John Kasich, Ted Cruz, Marco Rubio, Ben Carson, Jeb Bush, Jim Gilmore, Carly Fiorina, Chris Christie, Rand Paul, Rick Santorum, Mike Huckabee, George Pataki, Lindsey Graham, Bobby Jindal, Scott Walker, Rick Perry

Several candidates ran more than once, so I expect at least some of the 2016 Republicans and maybe some of the 2012 ones to try again in 2020.

United States presidential election, 2020 lists numerous potential candidates from both parties.

Democratic: Cory Booker, Julian Castro, Hillary Clinton, Andrew Cuomo, Bill de Blasio, Tulsi Gabbard, Kirsten Gillibrand, Kamala Harris, John Hickenlooper, Tim Kaine, Martin O'Malley, Deval Patrick, Bernie Sanders, Elizabeth Warren

Republican: Greg Abbott, Justin Amash, Kelly Ayotte, Charlie Baker, Chris Christie, Bob Corker, Tom Cotton, Ted Cruz, Mitch Daniels, Joni Ernst, Cory Gardner, Nikki Haley, John Kasich, Rand Paul, Mike Pence, Bruce Rauner, Marco Rubio, Ben Sasse, Donald Trump, Scott Walker

There is even a declared Republican candidate: Joe Walsh. He has stated that he will only run if Hillary Clinton gets elected in 2016.

2020 If Trump wins:
Michele Obama vs. Donald Trump
2020 If Clinton wins:
Hillary Clinton vs. Eric Trump
