Driver dies after ramming car into police vehicle on Champs-Elysees in probable terrorist attack

WaPo said:
Police said the attacker — who was 31 and from the northwestern Paris suburb of Argenteuil — was known to French authorities, the Associated Press reported. He was reportedly listed on the government’s “Fiche S,” a dossier of people suspected of posing a threat to national security.

“Once again, French security forces were targeted with this attempted attack on the Champs-Elysees,” Collomb said. He added that “a number of weapons, explosives to blow up this car” were discovered at the scene.

Why are those who are "known to authorities" for extremism not arrested and/or deported? Over and over again, you hear that these attackers have been known to authorities. The Manchester bomber, the Berlin "truck of peace" driver, etc. All "known to authorities". Enough already! If you know who they are, do something. To use a management cliche, be proactive, not reactive!

Oddly enough, defending freedom by incarcerating people who have not yet committed any crimes, has historically proven to be a counterproductive strategy.

The fact is that the security forces in Europe are doing an excellent job of protecting the public, as this, and many other recent attacks have shown - back in the day, organized gangs of Irish terrorists blew up huge bombs; Now lone terrorists have been reduced to using impromptu weapons such as vehicles and kitchen knives, and as this particular incident shows, they kill few people other than themselves. This individual may have posed a threat to national security; but his eventual actions resulted only in his own demise. I would say that this is about as good a result as can be hoped for.

Why is it that whenever somebody says "religion of peace strikes" we all know the speaker is talking about Islam? Why is it that whenever we hear of a "terrorist attack" it is more likely than not to have Islam involved? Is this more the phrasing of the media or is this more the religion itself?

That was what Hitler said about the Jewish problem in the late 30's.

It is always what the despot says.

Let's not look for causes and try to address them. Let's increase oppression.

I'd say it has to do with the number of terror incidents involving Muslims and religious intolerance of some.

Dude, where have you been? W was thrown under the bus in 2008 by the right-wing, and not a single person apparently voted for him in either 2000 or 2004, they all voted for the Libertarian Party candidate.
