NYT: video essay: Trump actually is making America great again

This NYT video argues that Obama hurt America by being competent. This caused many people to become satisfied with what the government was doing, which caused them to become disengaged. They stopped calling their senators, stopped voting, and this made it possible for radical white supremacists to push Trump into the White House.

Meanwhile, Trump has been such an unmitigated disaster and a failure as a president that people who never before got engaged are now carrying out their civic duty, calling elected officials, encouraging people to vote, etc.

So in a way, Obama's competence and decency were bad for America, while Trump's incompetence, narcissism, etc., have been good for civic engagement.

True. And civic engagement under an authoritarian regime leads to lots of dead bodies and "disappearances".
