Today marks the start of the 100 year anniversary of the start of the Armenian genocide. At the hands of muslim Turks, more than a million Armenians were slaughtered in what is recognized as the first modern genocide. Realpolitik prevents Obama saying the "G" word which is understandable given Turkey's NATO position. Just another campaign promise gone by the way side. A huge disappointment for the Armenians. Adam Schiff however, keeps up the good fight.

While it clearly was a genocide, is there any benefit to the US in bringing attention to a century old crime when they need the Turks' help right now?

It would be a nice thing to do, but does the benefir outweigh the cost?

It took the US government nearly 80 years to acknowledge the massacre at Wounded Knee, which was one of the last genocidal incidents in a long history of North American genocide. The Turks aren't too far off schedule.

Wow. This is what's causing controversy?

Obama's "refusal" to call a 100 year old event a genocide?

Much ado about nothing.

One thing I always wondered about Wounded Knee - where is the rest of Dee Brown buried?

As far as is known, all of him is still i Urbana, Illinois.

I'm sure that was literary license and not an actual request.

Well, the German president (largely ceremonial position) Joachim Gauck went there.
Armenian killings were genocide - German president

Well, he is German so he knows a thing or two about genocide.

My guess is if he were in negotiations with Turkey for aid in middle eastern muslim problems, he might be a little more selective in his language.

Long term denial and distortion of history is a dangerous thing. When people do not understand how the country came to be as it is today, they are at risk of repetition. We have a lot of the same kind of denials here in the U.S. Was killing 2 million Vietnamese genocide? Was killing upwards of a million Iraqis genocide? If numbers count, we have some of that onus in our own country. Not even mentioning the First Nations in the Americas from Alaska to Chili.

Repetition is occurring regularly. We need to recognize the humanity of all people and properly call it murder.

Arkirk: the problem is that the US don't have ethical freedom loving liberal politicians like what we see in Russia. The only hope for the US is for us to clone Putin.

They are very self-conscious about it too - they even have a word for dealing with the Nazi era - Vergangenheitsbewältigung.

And I think Turks need to wake up and smell the Turkish coffee.

.Aww, Derec. That's so sweet. Quoting a live action comic book.

I guess too late is better than never.

Actually that has been going on for decades. The term itself was coined in the 50s I think.

At least as relevant as a vaudeville cowboy.

Offend the Turks? With friends like Turkey who needs enemies?

The military industrial complex which wants to get paid to build missiles and bombs to drop on the people who are currently Turkey's enemy.
