Old white man says bad things about West Baltimore ...

Tone, context, and discernable intent:

The Baltimore Sun said:
The independent senator, who describes himself as a democratic socialist, walked the streets of Sandtown-Winchester for about 20 minutes, joined by community leaders and a swarm of cameras that mostly blocked his view of boarded rowhomes and crumbling marble steps. A handful of residents joined the spectacle, and occasionally broke out in chants of Gray's name.
The scene provided dramatic visuals of the economic inequality Sanders has made the center of his campaign, offering a new backdrop from which to argue for a higher minimum wage, tuition-free public college and tougher federal regulations of the nation's banking sector.

Mr Sanders did not like West Baltimore to a Third World Country according to the linked article. Mr Sanders likened the poverty he observed to that of the Third World." Unless there is a dispute about the depth and breadth of the poverty in West Baltimore, the OP is false advertising.

There is a lot of poverty there, and there is a lot of political mismanagement.

My point is that both pointed out what a basket case West Baltimore is. So why is Trump accused of "racism"?

Mitch McConnell has been senator for Kentucky since 1985 and it's still the biggest cesspit shit hole in the United States. No attacks by the Donald on him. Kentucky makes Baltimore look like Graceland.

Because it is not an isolated instance. To paraphrase Frank Vyan Walton:

People consider Trump to be racist because of his claim that Mexicans are “rapists”; his attempt to ban Muslims from entering the country; his reference to “shithole countries”; birtherism; his calling for the death penalty against the Exonerated 5 from the Central Park Jogger case; his being sued twice for housing discrimination; his father saying “You know I don't rent to n*ggers”; his father being arrested at a 1927 Klan riot; the Polish Gang and his encouraging clients of his modeling agency to violate immigration laws; saying Judge Gonzalo Curiel’s judgement can’t be trusted because he has Mexican heritage; saying that Gold Star Mother Ghazala Khan didn’t speak at the DNC for cultural reasons; claiming there were “fine people” on both sides of a violent alt-right attack on Charlotesville, including those who support keeping the favorite flag of the Klan on public and state property; “I don’t like black guys touching my money”; trying to convince The Apprentice first season runner-up Kwame Jackson that he should share his win with a white guy; repeatedly using the n-word backstage at The Apprentice; saying “black people are too stupid to vote for me” and “Haitians all have AIDS”; and finally, his use of a phrase that’s literally in the EEOC manual as a prime example of discrimination, when he told four U.S. citizens who happen to be members of Congress to “go back to the [crime-infested countries]” they came from. Him going after a congressman from Baltimore then say a representative from crime riddled poverty infested Kentucky or Alabama is racist and frankly pretty fucking predictable coming from Trump.

So the big difference; Trump would ignore poverty and crime in other areas in America because it doesn't fit the narrative he is trying to peddle. Sanders is intellectually honest enough and ethically consistent to aknowledge poverty and crime are issues that transcend race or party lines. Hope that explains the difference.

becasuse Trump attributes the negative aspects of Baltimore to immigrants.. individuals, and Bernie attributes it to poverty... economic climate.

So in West Virginia, the poverty rate is around 19% overall, 20% in rural areas. In Baltimore, 24% are below the poverty line (2015).

It does seem odd, Maryland has the second lowest overall poverty rating. The 10 worst US states regarding poverty are all deep red states, except New Mexico, where I expect the Native American population is dragging them down. The GOP is full of shit.

If you want to see some absolutely flea-bitten, end-of-the-world places, go through the Mississippi delta and visit towns like Marks and Tutwiler. Our Pres. will never go on about them unless they somehow get a Black Congressman or -woman who refuses to worship the mighty Trump.

Because
1) Mr. Trump used racist dog-whistle language, and
2) Mr. Trump blamed it on someone who had little to do with it, a someone who happens to be black, and
3) this part of Mr. Trump's nasty attacks on congress people of color, and
4 Mr Trump has a long and documented history of racist/bigoted statements.

BTW, Mr. Sanders had the decency to actually show up in West Baltimore and observe first hand the situation, something Mr. Trump has not done.

And, before you or anyone else thinks I am a Bernie Sanders apologist, I think the man would be ineffective as a President in the unlikely event he ever won the Presidency. Mr. Sanders is not a Democrat and has no business running for the Democratic Party's candidate for POTUS.

Those 'rat infested' places in Baltimore? They're owned by Trump's son-in-law

BALTIMORE — Davon Jones doesn't have to look far to see the irony in President Donald Trump's tweets that Baltimore is a "rat and rodent infested mess." His apartment owned by the president's son-in-law has been invaded by mice since he moved in a year ago.

"I don't know how they come in," Jones says. "Every time I catch them, they come right back."

Jared Kushner's family real estate firm owns thousands of apartments and townhomes in the Baltimore area, and some have been criticized for the same kind of disrepair and neglect that the president has accused local leaders of failing to address. Residents have complained about mold, bedbugs, leaks and, yes, mice — plenty of mice. And they say management appears in no hurry to fix the problems.

Conditions got so bad two years ago that the Baltimore County government issued a release showing the Kushner Cos. had violated housing codes more than 200 times in just 10 months and only moved to fix the problems after being threatened with fines.

Right. Derec is SO clever, he knew everyone would automatically think of the racist asshole who blames it all on blacks.

It's much simpler than all of that. Mr. Trump is a bigot. End of discussion.
Trump isn't a bigot. He is a narcissist. His statements are meant to rile up the bigots, because he is going to need every one of them to win in 2020.

Don the Con is a racist, like most of the white folks in the GOP. What's your point other than denial?

Trump isn't a bigot. He is a narcissist.

Those are not mutually exclusive.
He is such a narcissist, I don't think he cares enough about other people to be a bigot. Trump hangs around whomever benefits him the best at whatever moment. This asshat is likely willing to ignite a riot in order to get elected.

Well, you just don't often see bigotry being defined as based on caring about people.
