When a president engages in unprecedented levels of lethal anti-science propaganda, you get unprecedented response from the scientific community. Earlier this past week Scientific American broke a 175 year tradition of not endorsing political candidates to try and ensure Trump's defeat. Also, 108 Stanford medical experts have signed an open letter denouncing "the falsehoods and misrepresentations of science" of their own former colleague and current Trump COVID advisor, Scott Atlas. Unlike Atlas, whose expertise is radiology, most of the signers of the letter are experts in microbiology, infectious disease, and epidemiology. Atlas wasn't selected for his relevant expertise, but because he is a right wing dogmatist who is part of a conservative think tank that has produced several members of former Republican cabinets.
They point out that Atlas' statements are inconsistent with prevailing science related to masks, social distancing, testing asymptomatic people, effects on children and young adults, and safe approaches to herd immunity.
