possible coup in Zimbabwe

I believe it is called a "Constitutional Coup". The military is asserting pressure on who will lead the country, but otherwise the Constitution won't be touched... in the authoritarian nation. So I guess on some level that makes sense*.

* - okay it doesn't

Zimbabwe's one of those countries where you could throw a dart at the phone book and come up with a better and more legitimate president than the current guy.

Let's hope this works out.

The conflict appears to be between the President and dictator, Robert Mugabe, who is in his 90s and possibly senile (it's difficult to tell with someone who was never very rational to start with); and the head of the army.

Mugabe recently sacked his expected successor (who was a longstanding crony and cookie cut-out copy of his boss on policy matters), in favour of having his wife take over on his death. The army don't like this idea.

It's the unspeakable in pursuit of the inedible - neither choice is going to be much of a change. But in a country where there hasn't been any change at all for decades, anything could happen. Once people get the idea that the leader need not be Robert Mugabe, they might start asking pointed questions about whether the leader even needs to be ZANU-PF.

The current president has been running the country since 1980 and is supposedly very corrupt. They said on the news they are not conducting a coup but it looks like they are.

Yup, corrupt and inept. He has even less understanding of economics than Chavez did, decreed prices and then was shocked when nobody would sell the goods for less than their cost. Used the printing press to fund government until he inflated the currency out of existence--Zimbabwe now uses foreign currency.

Typical land "reform" which means take it from the people that own it and give it to his cronies. A token amount was given to the workers on the farms--they knew their jobs but had neither the knowledge nor the capital (remember, a farmer must pay for seeds and fertilizer and won't see a penny for moths) to actually farm.

The last of the batshit crazy by oddly humorous African dictators. Or is it?
