President Carter has died

We were never close to being nuked.
Yeah, nah.

Survival is not proof of safety. It's not even evidence for safety.

Deterrence seems to have worked so far, but it certainly led to situations where the US was very close indeed to being nuked.

I've never gotten this feeling of "safety" when everyone has nuclear weapons that can destroy civilization as we know it. That's not safety, it's insanity. And people can claim "no one wants a nuclear war", but that doesn't take into account the potential of some rogue world leader going psychotic, which only increases the more narcissists get in power. And I definitely don't feel safe when narcissists are in power.

And the Norwegian rocket incident.

Twice now that we are aware of Russia saw false positives due to the shitty nature of their equipment. Not internal mistakes that could be figured out, but misidentification of real, external events. Especially the Norwegian rocket--it bird was real, it's just their shitty systems were so poor at figuring out where it was that the volume of uncertainty included the possibility of an EMP decapitation strike. And unlike the Stanislav Petrov incident the fact that it was a lone bird wasn't unreasonable for an EMP strike. And the burn looked just like a sub-launched missile because it started life as a sub launched ballistic missile, when it was retired from that duty the boom was removed and it was used for a scientific launch. And their shitty bureaucracy lost the launch notification. (Probably because it didn't have a time on it--the booster was prepped and sitting on the pad for a long time before it's objective appeared and someone pushed the button.)

There actually is an element of safety. The missiles ensure nobody can win a war, thus they remove much of the reason for war. If the bomb didn't exist I expect Ukraine would be WWIII.

Again though, this doesn't take into account the possibility of a psychotic world leader, who won't understand the concept of an "unwinnable war".

45 years ago Jimmy Carter announced boycott of Olympic Games in Moscow.
Americans athletes which missed these games still hate him for that.
And considering that Soviet Afghan War was explicitly and purposefully provoked by Carter himself .....
