Propaganda works – 58 percent of Republicans believe education is bad

Critics of Fox News may discount the effectiveness of the right wing outlet’s effort to transform America into a fascist theocracy controlled by the ultra-rich and extremist evangelicals, but that would be a monumental mistake. Like all successful propaganda agencies, Fox broadcasts talking points crafted by evangelical and corporate activists nonstop until their mendacious messaging is considered biblical truths.

Fox News, like Republicans and Trump, could never succeed as an ultra-conservative propaganda outlet without an ignorant population. The only way to continue having success at propagandizing is convincing Americans that being educated and informed is detrimental to the nation and its citizens; something Fox and Republicans have been very successful at over the past two years.

Since 2015? About the time this happened?

A Yale student cussing out a faculty member braying that the university "is not an intellectual space"? Real mystery how anyone could have developed a negative view of higher education.

I suspect that they do, and subsequently get their "education" from youtube clips comments.

Wow.

It's not everyday Trausti, Patooka, and ZiprHead are all in agreement.

Well done, guys.

It’s simple, really. The “other” is anyone intelligent. It’s exactly what the Nazis did. Demonized intellectuals, because they, of course, could see right through them and what they were attempting. Trausti is just following instructions.

The problem with universities is not intelligent people. Science or engineering departments where you actually need some smarts are not the problem.
In the 60s there were a lot of protests by radical, extremist students and university administrators caved in and gave them what they wanted - more politicized universities.
The problem are all the phony, politicized fields of "study" that give us things like the "Critical race theory", "Newton's Principia as a rape manual" and similar nonsense. It does not take intelligence to come up with that crap.

It’s exactly what the Nazis did.
Godwin. You lose.

Demonized intellectuals, because they, of course, could see right through them and what they were attempting.

Actually Nazi attempts to politicize/ideologize science (i.e. demonize relativity as "Jewish Physics") have a lot in common with left wing PoMo's attempt to politicize science by declaring natural science as white and male and thus inferior to "other ways of knowing". However, I would not go so far to say that what PoMos are doing is "exactly what Nazis did".

We are up to our necks in that shit in our state's "Clean Water Movement". About 10% of the movement is fringe lefties. The remainder are hard core Trumpists. They have united over their hatred of "teh establushmint". They are anti-vaccine. They are like barking dogs at the public meetings, denigrating the scientists and state resource managers as being both "shit for brains academics with no 'common sense'" and "bought and paid-for shills of MONSANTO!".

One meme that illustrated their level of brain washing. A meme circulated among that group that showed Kamala Harris as a child and claimed that she lied about busing because she went to school in the 1970s, long after segregation ended. These are men over 60 years old. They were around in the 1970s and 1980s; opposing bussing because they didn't want us white genX kids in the burbs to have to go to school with 'Democrats' from the inner city. These boomers didn't move out into Warwick County so their kids would have to go to school with the hoodlums in downtown Newport News. But that meme goes around and they all share it, believing Kamala to be lying about busing because she didn't live during official segregation. These are professional fishing guides, the president of United Waterfowlers Florida, etc... and their social media pages are about 90% political memes and 10% fishing and hunting.

It isn't liberals in Florida attacking the University of Florida Institute for Food and Agriculture Science. Look no further than the alt-right hero Mike Adams "The Health Ranger" of NaturalNews.com and his pseudoscientific grifting. Right wing is all about that crap these days.

The problem with universities is not intelligent people.

The "problem" the right has with universities is that when you're college educated, you aren't stupid enough to fall for anything Trump (or the GOP) say. That and they tend to contradict everything Big Oil says.

Godwin. You lose.

Not when it's actual nazis we're talking about.

Shall I quote Limbaugh, Hannity, or any of the other mouth pieces of The Heartland Institute or The Heritage Foundation on environmental science or ecology?

Other ways of knowing? You'll need to ask a Falwell, Hovind, Graham, or maybe Mike Pence about those. I'm a member of the "March for Science" group on facebook and there's no altnernative medicine and the like there. It is completely unwelcome and March for Science is generally a liberal reaction to Trump and his Wheeler/Pruitt EPA and such.

Now you go to a conservative's facebook page like https://www.facebook.com/denise.eberle.50 and you can get all your Trump truth and buy some "all heal salve" while you're at it. She knows better than any egghead scientist.

Ben Shapiro went to Harvard and Michael Knowles went to Yale and they are 2 of the smartest conservatives around today. Not everyone falls for the indoctrination. They are still conservatives even after going to leftist schools.

Are you sure he is "alt-right" or right at all? Anti-vax, anti-GMO nonsense has a lot of currency on the far left.
Can you give me some citation about his political leanings?

Shall I quote Limbaugh, Hannity, or any of the other mouth pieces of The Heartland Institute or The Heritage Foundation on environmental science or ecology?
Limbaugh and Hannity are idiots, so no.
But that said, about the larger issue of climate change denial, if contemporary academia wasn't guilty of politicizing race and gender as they are, it would be harder to also accuse them of politicizing science.

Are they and people they agree with dominating the mainstream academia?
And I have never argued that there was not a lot of nonsense on the Right as well. But the nonsense from the Left is dominant in academia.
I think we need to fight all nonsense.

I was somewhat disappointed in the March for Science as it seemed so dominated by climate science. Not that it is not a very important issue, it is, but it is hardly the only area where anti-science worldview has taken hold.
What about unscientific opposition to technologies like GMO and nuclear power?
Or what about the Hawaiian creationist opposition to the Thirty Meter Telescope that was heating up during the MfS?

Instead, college students are protesting against it for no good reason.
University of Hawaii students conduct ‘educational flash mob’ to protest Thirty Meter Telescope

Now you go to a conservative's facebook page like https://www.facebook.com/denise.eberle.50 and you can get all your Trump truth and buy some "all heal salve" while you're at it. She knows better than any egghead scientist.

Yeah sure, but let's not pretend that all this holistic/alternative medicine is not much more widely spread on the hippie Left.

The "problem" the right has with universities is that when you're college educated, you aren't stupid enough to fall for anything Trump (or the GOP) say.
Many college educated people fall for many other things though. These days, there is a lot of college education that does not really improve one's understanding of how the world works. If you major in non-narrative theater or some such, are you really any more ready to understand the pros and cons of say an oil pipeline than somebody who never went to college?

That and they tend to contradict everything Big Oil says.
Anti-oil activists tend to say stupid shit even if college educated.

Not when it's actual nazis we're talking about.
What actual Nazis?

You lose.

Nope. The loser is still you.

How would you know?

If you major in non-narrative theater or some such, are you really any more ready to understand the pros and cons of say an oil pipeline than somebody who never went to college?

Yes, absolutely, because what you evidently don't seem to understand is that one's major is just their focus, not the full extent of their education. Most college students are required to take classes outside of their major as well, but there is also a general level of intelligence/academic excellence that most colleges worth their salt require as a standard for admission.

Iow, except for various "party schools" and certain sports-related scholarships, just getting into a college requires one to have at least graduated high school with an above average GPA or similar standards. Again, not for all, but those worth a damn.

Anti-oil activists tend to say stupid shit even if college educated.

Yep. But whereas that's the outlier for the college educated, those who are not college educated are almost all far more stupid and do things like vote for Donald Trump, so when you try for a false equivalence, you're generally talking about a very small percentage of college educated saying and doing stupid shit compared to an almost full majority of non-college educated saying and doing stupid shit.

Along the lines of 5-10% "stupid shit" in the college educated column compared to about 85-90% "stupid shit" in the non-college educated column.

Not when it's actual nazis we're talking about.

What actual Nazis?

The ones in America that have slithered out of their outhouses since the Trump occupation.

Nope. The loser is still you.

Oooh. Sick burn, bro!
