Reuters: Putin says Russia is beefing up its nuclear arsenal
http://www.reuters.com/article/2015/06/16/us-russia-nuclear-putin-idUSKBN0OW17X20150616

President Vladimir Putin said on Tuesday Russia would add more than 40 new intercontinental ballistic missiles to its nuclear arsenal this year and a defense official accused NATO of provoking a new arms race.

Putin made his announcement a day after Russian officials denounced a U.S. plan to station tanks and heavy weapons in NATO states on Russia's border as the most aggressive U.S. act since the Cold War.

"More than 40 new intercontinental ballistic missiles able to overcome even the most technically advanced anti-missile defense systems will be added to the make-up of the nuclear arsenal this year," Putin, flanked by army officers, said in a speech to a military and arms fair.

Es un completo bastardo.

Everything NATO is doing is predictable and thus totally avoidable by Russia. Thus everything going according to his plans.

I don't think we'd feel too happy about Putin putting tanks in Cuba or in Canada/Mexico. Well, actually tanks in Cuba would probably be okay.

If it were the Cold War still. Has Poland or Czech Republic been jittery about German arms post-1992? Every single thing since day 1 in Ukraine had to predict this. So what if the friends from NATO wasted money on waepons in Poland and the Baltic?

That's because it is convenient for a Chávez-Ortega-Putin style pseudo-presidential régime for NATO to be your gun-toting playmates. It helps stay in power and it looks good when riding shirtless. There has been zero need to become enemies with the US. Frienemies, maybe, but nuclear arms race? Putin is smart.

Forty new missiles, huh?

Russia's been upgrading an aging nuclear arsenal for a while, now. They've got about 48 ICBMs that were first deployed in 1968. It would make sense for them to replace those just to keep their arsenal reasonably up to date.

Sounds to me like the decision to put new missiles in the tubes, and retired the old shit, was made a while back, and not in retaliation to any actions the US or NATO has made. So not much has changed, really...

You are exactly right. this Putin announcement is completely unrelated to the current events. They are in fact replacing old ICBMs with new ones.

I would say that the announcement is very much related to current events, even if the actual replacement ICBMs might not be.

Putin beefing up his nuke arsenal isn't news.

Putin nuking up his beef arsenal, now that's news...

Dude, Putin and russian news have been talking about these fucking rockets for the last 10 years, every damn day. So there were no way to put these two events apart for more than 1 day.

It was George Bush who said "if you're not with us you're with the enemy."

Putin wants an independent Russia. Is there any nation anywhere who is prepared to try to be independent of America that is not their enemy?

In what non-paranoid-conspiracy way is Russia not an independent country?

I think he means independent in the manner of a country that acts on its own as opposed to having America tell it what to do.

So how does that relate to upping the nuclear threat worldwide? Parties in Putin's Russia and our country are trying to make this move. Whomever these parties are, they need to be defeated. Let's stop playing doomsday okay?

TomSawyer,

I fail to recall the time when Russia's policies were dictated by US (i.e. told what to do and did so).

Please refresh my memory.

Does the forced reversal of the Russian policy of stationing intermediate range missiles on the territory of their Cuban ally, under threat of annihilation by the US military, not count?

No, it doesn't. That all started because the US stationed its nuclear missiles in Turkey, and the Soviets obviously wanted them out, so came up with stationing their own in Cuba. They succeeded when the US agreed to remove their nukes from Turkey.

All these years you've been thinking Kennedy is the hero who won that match? LOL -your government's propaganda worked real well, it appears!

Nevertheless, it was a Russian policy that was reversed, and was reversed because the US didn't want Russian missiles in Cuba.

I know that the Jupiters in Turkey were part of the deal (and that their presence was part of the reason for the Soviet policy in the first place); but the USSR remained in-range of US intermediate range missiles in other NATO countries (notably West Germany) even after the Turkish Jupiters were decommissioned, while the US successfully dictated that the Russians should not base IRBMs within striking distance of the USA.

I have never thought that; and I am not aware of any propaganda from my government to that effect - although I have seen plenty from the US government.

They are dictated all the time, it's just Russia does not comply and want US to stop doing it.

The US has been provoking Russia (and China), but maybe only as a means to stop them emerging as rivals. they would like to isolate Russia, particularly from Europe, as this will help keep America's dominant position globally. What America doesn't want is a nuclear confrontation. They are game enough to push things as far as they can without having that play out.

I think Putin knows this and so is putting his cards on the table.
