The term “Conspiracy Theory” gives far too much legitimacy to these kooky ideas that get floated mostly by the right wing extremists.

I am pondering what would be a more apt name.

Paranoid Fantasy
Paranoid Accusation
Unhinged Rant

?? What do you think would be a good descriptor for the thing currently termed as “conspiracy Theories,” like the Seth Rich stuff and the pedophile pizza parlors?

It doesn't describe all types, but in the field we sometimes call this phenomenon illusory pattern perception, or apophenia (it applies in cases where the conspiracy is based mainly on a coincidence of unrelated incidents).

"paranoia fap".

Depends on the nature of how the narrative is connected and how it came about...

Paranoid Projection Porn
Glenn Beck Mind Map
Agitprop

The butterfly sanctuary thread brings home the reason why I think it’s important for this descriptor to match the seriousness of the affliction.

This isn’t just theories. This is paranoid delusion. And it’s dangerous.

QAnon Crazies Are Dangerous

A Michigan man’s obsession with the pro-Trump QAnon conspiracy theory culminated in a Sunday incident in which he murdered his wife and badly injured one of his children, his daughter told The Daily Beast.

Igor Lanis, a 53-year-old resident of the Michigan city of Walled Lake, was killed Sunday by police after he started shooting at them with a shotgun, according to the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office.

The Oakland County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement that the injured child, a 25-year-old woman, managed to call police around 4:11 a.m. after being shot by her father. She couldn’t provide any information, like the location of the house, but dispatchers triangulated the call and officers arrived at the home about five minutes later.

Lanis came out the front and opened fire at them using a Remington 870 pump action shotgun, the statement said. Walled Lake cops and Oakland County Sheriff’s deputies fired back, killing Landis.

“Officers observed the 911 caller/victim, a 25-year-old female, at the front door... attempting to crawl from the home,” the statement said. “They dragged her to safety. She stated that her dad shot her and her mother.”
That year, Lanis became fascinated by QAnon and the idea that Joe Biden stole the election.

“It’s a very big contributor to what happened,” Rebecca Lanis said of her father’s QAnon beliefs.

Igor Lanis’ mental health worsened as he became drawn into the conspiracy theories, according to Rebecca Lanis. He insisted that family members watch conspiracy-theory videos about the 5G cell towers, vaccines, and the election. He started to believe that some world leaders were in fact alien lizard-people in disguise, a fringe conspiracy theory even among QAnon supporters. Rebecca Lanis said family members tried to pull her father out of his beliefs, but arguing with him was “pointless.”
The Walled Lake shootings are just the latest killing tied to QAnon. A California man who allegedly murdered his 10-month-old daughter and 2-year-old son in Mexico told police that his crimes were motivated by QAnon, according to prosecutors. In 2019, a QAnon believer allegedly killed the purported head of the Gambino mafia family in a misguided attempt to bring him to a QAnon tribunal. That suspect was deemed mentally unfit to stand trial. Earlier that year, a Seattle QAnon believer convinced his brother was a lizard person murdered him with a samurai sword.

I'm going to stick with "paranoia fap".

The creation of it is just as much a fap as what people do when they have it, which is to make more of it, which is just fap.

It's all just drivel and posh and has no bearing on anything.

I don’t agree that the paranoid rantings are “drivel,” when they result in deaths. That’s not “drivel” to me.

“Drivel” can be ignored. Paranoid delusions cannot.

I mean people can do some pretty awful thing with and for fappage.

Considering what happened in Michigan, let's call these conspiracy theories what they actually are - accomplices to murder.
