I confess that I am both shocked and dismayed by the rather quiet acquiescence that I am reading here, as though this is no big deal. Frankly, I’ve never been so angry or disgusted in my entire life—which is saying something.

So Toni expressed this in the other thread and I've been wondering for over a week what can a common individual do? Legal action only please. Please don't suggest anything illegal.

I have written my Senators and Representative in Congress. But frankly in Massachusetts it's not like my Senators and Rep aren't already against trump. Elizabeth Warren has been very vocal.

There have been no demonstrations around me that I'm aware of.

It's almost silly to mention but I got myself an anti-Trump magnet (not sticker) for my car. And I confess it worries me that some MAGAtard will smash my car.

What can a common person do to legally resist the growing despotism?

Imagine you are a founder of a fledgling small political organization founded to expose and resist Trump. Mostly like 1 or 2 hundred people on a mailing list, but that you can send info to and perhaps organize at a couple of events a year. It wouldn't take long to put it together and brainstorm ideas for the events. Find a few (like 5) like-minded people in your area (maybe in work or neighborhood or your circle of friends) and meet once a week in a bar or coffee house to talk about what is happening and any to-do items for the week and planning for your couple of events for the year. Also, discuss ideas for op-eds, a website with writings, and how your influence as a group of a couple hundred can sway politicians and voters. You could also look into transforming your group into a chapter of a broader organization if it meets your requirements.

There's a protest scheduled for tomorrow at 5PM in front of the treasury building.

Nothing. Legal or otherwise.
Appears as such, other than at least trying in the courts.

The failure some are having here is to recognize that the GOP is about 99.7% complicit, so this isn't one guy, it is Trump with the entire GOP machine behind him. Trump had them flee the US Capitol building on January 6th, 2021, over obviously false accusations of voter fraud. They didn't care, to them, that was "business".

The main error is that it is the GOP and not Trump who is winning here. Trump is the useful idiot who is looking to dismantle the Executive Branch as desired by the GOP igoing as far back as the 1980s. Trump isn't killing USAid, the GOP and the Heritage Foundation is, they are just letting Trump take the fall for anything that fails.

Add SCOTUS's Loper-Bright findings, and we are along for a ride for a bit. All because Obama and the Democrats passed the ACA, a generally popular, now, piece of legislation.

Trump's overreach can't be defeated without some Repubs doing the Liz Cheney walk. Some. Are any stepping forward yet?
Why would they? They want this.

What will be funny is that all of the spending is cut... so less services, less employment... still a large deficit!

Nothing. Legal or otherwise.
Wow! Defeatist much?! YES THERE IS. We the people (remember them), outnumber them by a LOT. Do not pretend we have no power.
But it would probably take being inconvenienced and we don't want to be inconvenienced, do we? We've lived this good life for so long. Let's just suck what comfort we can out of what is left of it. I mean, what do you want me to do? Boycott something? Yeah, right. I know what will happen. I'll boycott and no one else will and then I'll feel like a chump when everyone else was having a good time. Fuck that.
Maybe go off social media so the powers that be won't know how we might react to a particular proposal. Then maybe the takeover won't run like a well oiled machine. Not bitch on the internet! How fucking long am I suppose to do that for? What am I going to do with myself if I can't spin a week's long narrative out of supposition? You really think Zuck & Musk are running algorithms that can track this stuff?

So curtail my spending and stop putting my stream of consciousness on the internet. For what, like two years, maybe four. That's your answer? Tell you what, I'll send a form letter to my congressperson if you tell me who it is and walk me through the process. I can click on links. I'm good at that.

I've gotta be honest - if I wasn't a cis straight white male ...

Pastor Martin Niemöller said:
... they came first for the Communists, and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a Communist. Then they came for the Jews, and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a Jew. Then they came for the trade unionists, and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a trade unionist. Then they came for the Catholics, and I didn't speak up because I was a Protestant. Then they came for me, and by that time no one was left to speak up.

It's not much, but I've joined and been making some donations to the ACLU, Americans United for the Separation of Church and State and the American Humanist Association. I'm getting lots of texts and emails from other organizations begging for money and to sign petitions, but I'm not familiar with them, so I'm sticking with the organizations that have been around for a long time and are lawyering up to try and fight this shit. So, that's something most of us can do, even if the donation is small.

Not sure if protests would do much, since I felt that they never helped that much with most other causes. Still, if I was younger and didn't suffer from chronic pain, I'd probably get out there and join some well organized peaceful ones. There was a big one in the ATL area last weekend in defense of immigrants. It was held in an extremely diverse area that is populated by a very high percentage of immigrants. I did read that many of the stores are empty as people are scared and I don't blame them.

I've gotta be honest - if I wasn't a cis straight white male and if I were living in America right now, I'd be sinking all my disposable income into firearms, a shit ton of household cleaning products and some gardening gear.
I would be and I'm just an atheist Jew who also happened to be born with a genetic condition. Unfortunately I don't live on my own and firearms aren't approved in this house.

Not sure if protests would do much,
recall that Trump in his first term wanted to shoot protestors in the legs. He was stopped by someone who wasn’t a drunk, adulterous, tv show host.
There were lots of protests last weekend all over the country and I don't think anyone was shot in the legs. Still, I doubt they did much good.
