The much-loved Octagon Girls could be banned from a UFC event in Australia next month after a politician claimed the tradition was “outdated”.

Similar to boxing, mixed martial arts deploys scantily-clad females to parade around the cage prior to each round at their events.
That has led to the likes of Chrissy Blair, Brittney Palmer, Arianny Celeste and Jhenny Andrade all becoming huge favourites with fight fans across the globe.

However, ahead of UFC 243 at Melbourne’s Marvel Stadium on October 6, Dana White’s promotion is facing calls for the “sexist and backward” custom to be axed.

And Lord Mayor of Melbourne Sally Capp is leading the charge.
“It’s 2019, do we really still need scantily clad women to wander around the middle of a fighting ring between rounds?” she told the Herald Sun.

They were never needed, they were wanted.

“Grid girls are no longer part of Formula One, walk-on girls are no longer part of professional darts — surely it’s time to move on.”

Grid girls were banned from last year’s F1 Grand Prix in Melbourne with walk-on girls later being axed from the darts world championships.

I guarantee you Sally Capp has never been to a UFC event before. But like all Puritans, the idea of other people having fun boils her blood.

Now Capp is receiving plenty of support in her quest to put the Octagon girls out of work.

“The Grand Prix did the right thing in ending the use of grid girls and we encourage other events to make similar moves,” a spokesperson for Victorian premier Daniel Andrews said.

The attempted stand against UFC comes after ring girls were barred for a bumper boxing event last weekend.
Former world champ Jeff Horn was knocked out by Michael Zerafa at the Battle of Bendigo.

But pre-event, promoters decided to replace the females with a man to perform the pre-round duties following fierce criticism from councillors and women’s advocacy groups.

I wonder how many feminists attend boxing matches? And how many women's lives were saved that night because the audience watching two men beat each other to a pulp didn't see an attractive woman between rounds? These councillors and advocacy groups are heroes.

Trio Tammy Bills, Demey Maconachie and Kalista Thomas were all axed in favour of “fight progress managers” — a man in trousers and a shirt.

Local councillor Yvonne Wrigglesworth had argued beforehand “stereotypes of this nature was not respectful of women”.

“Being respectful of women is key to eliminating other forms of violence, especially violence towards women and children,” fellow politician Jennifer Alden blasted.
Ring girls get to travel the world with UFC and reportedly earn around $A36,000-a-year for their part-time work with the promotion, with many going on to secure modelling contracts and other TV work.

Remember ladies and gentlemen, men watching other men beat the shit out of each other doesn't model or encourage violence, but the attractive women wandering around between the actual violence is what encourages violence!

And the whining continues...

To be fair, the whole point of professional wrestling is to watch scantily clad, fairly well built members of both genders parade around and get sweaty with each other. It would be nice if the women had as much involvement in the story as the men, though.

And the whining continues...

It's true: feminist whining never stops.
I

You are whining over the removal of an objectifying application of scantily clad women in a gaudy visual spectacle purely as "eye candy". The MPs were whining about the presence of scantily clad women in Such a spectacle.

You're both whining about something the other feels strongly about.

Why is there no argument for some real function for said scantily clad (but perhaps more muscular) women, especially in pro wrestling? Then we get scantily clad women AND more fighting.

Maybe cast the women wrestlers as "ring girls" and the male wrestlers as "ring boys" and take turns?

First, mixed martial arts isn't wrestling.

Second, serving as eye candy IS a real function. That's why models get paid.

I lose nothing in particular over these kinds of bans. I don't voluntarily watch two men beat each other into brain- damaged pulps, nor do I find enjoyment in watching cars go round in a circle, nor do I look at scantily-clad, attractive women and feel any kind of excitement.

But some people do enjoy these things and I think what people do voluntarily is generally none of my business, let alone my duty to try and stop. Feminists don't feel the same.

Do you think the women enjoy this kind of work and would continue to do it if they could earn as much money doing some other kind of work that allowed them to keep their clothes on?

Would you feel the same if the ring girls were instead ring boys whose function it was to walk around, scantily clad, and add some sex to the violence?

No, generally models get paid to make clothing look good, not to look good in clothing.

What you're thinking about is porn stars.

Personally, I find the underrepresentation of scantily clad males to be I sulting and disappointing. It would be nice to see some dudes washing some car hoods in short shorts... Anywhere from 130lb to 220lb, I think, would be absolutely "worth it". Maybe while wearing leather caps and vests. Leather never gets old.

Maybe get some women into the sport ...

They're clothed. Scantily clad isn't naked.

I certainly do think some women enjoy this kind of work and that's why they do it voluntarily. In fact, there are millions of women who spend a great deal of time taking photos of their scantily clad bodies and posting it on Tumblrgram for free.

If they can find other work with more desirable conditions then they are free to pursue such work.
Would you feel the same if the ring girls were instead ring boys whose function it was to walk around, scantily clad, and add some sex to the violence?

Feel the same as what? If there's a market for scantily- clad, attractive men to walk around looking hot at sports events, great! More power to 'em!

Of course there's a market. They're called "athletes". Personally, I would prefer sporting events to include more female athletes rather than just "athletic supporters".

Edit: another fun model would be where every such sport had 2 teams, where the winner is determined between which combined team has the best win/loss ratio, and they both have to strip down and "cheerlead" for each other.

There's women's mixed martial arts. Of course, that includes biological men who identify as women, and who crack the skulls of biological women opponents before 45 seconds have elapsed, but diff'rent strokes for diff'rent folks.

Where's the irony?

That's what usually happens when men move into jobs that have been traditionally assigned to women, especially when deeply rooted sexism is involved. Some women lose their jobs, the guys don't have to parade around in 'sexy' clothes and show off their 'assets', and the job title changes to something more respectable. Eventually the situation stabilizes with women and men both performing the same job under better conditions, often with better pay.

The other way to achieve equality would be having equal numbers of Ring Girls and Ring Boys wearing hot pants and showing off their abs flouncing around between rounds, smiling and looking available. But we can't have that, now can we?

The world is changing and someone is unhappy. Big deal.

I'm surprised the OP was titled "Another week in the strange death of land down under where the women glow and the men thunder".

No. The purpose isn't to look hot, but to compete.

You don’t think that scantily clad young women parading around are competing????

I don’t believe that you are that naive or that ignorant.

And what is your problem if scantily clad young women are no longer featured at prize fights?
