RIP Nancy Reagan

Republicans: Win one for the Gipperette!

Reagans sure have a knack for dying in election years.

Kind of sad. Its not every First Lady who appeared in cheesy B grade sci-fi movies.

Donovan's Brain.

Actually she got tagged with Alzheimer's too and ended up not remembering to just say no. I do feel sorry for people like her and her husband...sorry they had to develop into enemies of the people, haughty and arrogant and full of violence and venom...and secret dirty wars. I don't have any particular forgiveness for the Reagans. Their legacy in Central America was a lot of bodies in mass graves and a christian idiot with impunity to this day. Political power can buy one hell of a lot of human misery. I won't be crying for either of the Reagans.

I hear they're going to bury the cunt on Friday the 13th.

While it's easy to pick on Nancy Reagan for using astrology, on a lot of matters she was a positive influence on her husband's presidency. In particular, she was one of the "pragmatists" who pressed President Reagan to tone down his anti-Soviet rhetoric in his second term, and to meet Mikhail Gorbachev for the 1985 Geneva summit that thawed US-Soviet relations and reduced the chances of war between them.

If you say too many nice things about the Reagans you may get chucked off these fora.

Cute, but obviously false.

I never much cared for Nancy Reagan. It always seemed like she was one of those self-centered righteous people who only acquired empathy when they personally experienced pain. It also seemed like she controlled her love-sick husband in unhealthy ways and snubbed people viciously ala Barbara Bush. I could be wrong, that was just my impression watching her in action when she was campaigning and in the white house.

So, when the GOP finally get around to raising Reagan from the dead in order to battle Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton, is he going to go on some kind of insane killing spree until they revive Nancy as well to try and calm him down?

Did she see that Trump could possibly be president and that's what killed her?

I can't say I really know much about her. I was only 11 when Reagan left office. Certainly the crimes of her husbands Administration don't fall on her shoulder... technically they only fell on Oliver North's shoulders.

You are still here, aren't you?

Well, Ollie and Nancy's astrology advisor.

I don't understand the nostalgia for the Reagan administration among Republicans and the desire to double down on the Reagan policies. Nearly every problem that we have today can be traced back to the neoliberal policies of the Reagan era. Problems that were directly caused by or made worse by those policies, including

  • a moribund, poorly performing economy
  • ever increasing income and wealth inequality
  • an out of control financial sector that produced the worse recession since the Great Depression
  • a retreat from social progress
  • the ever growing threat of devolving into a theocracy
  • replacing realism, empiricism and science with ideology and faith
  • a retreat from our previously strict attitudes toward terrorism
  • rapid increases in the incarceration rates and terms of non-violent offenders
  • replacing diplomacy with bluster, saber rattling and war
  • the exponential growth in the impact of money in politics at the cost of democracy
  • out pacing the Nixon administration as the most corrupt in five generations and counting
  • seriously deteriorating our mental health system leading to an exponential increase in homelessness
  • contributing to problem of illegal immigration by effectively relieving business of the threat of prosecution for hiring illegals

These are just the ones that I can think of off of the top of my head.

That's because you are intelligent, informed and observant, and don't think with your feelings. That's not true of many U.S. citizens.
