Same-sex marriage in Brazil

Brazil - a huge and fascinating country I know little about. I just found out they have had same-sex marriage since 2013 and civil unions since 2004. I would have though they had some strict Roman Catholic values or such nonsense.

I had read about this during some of the FIFA and IOC controversy regarding them awarding hosting privileges to countries with poor standards for LGBT rights (and other human rights). Brazil has a bunch of other issues it faces, and most host countries do face some degree of criticism, but homophobic laws didn't seem to be much of an issue. Colombia is another country where LGBT rights are more progressive than I would have thought, though full union/ marriage rights and adoption rights are awaiting deliberation from Congress this year (or something like that).

It's amazing how foreigners hold on to this archaic view that Brazil and Latin America are somehow attached to Roman Catholicism, where actually the only active militant regious movement in Brazil has been Pentecostal Christianity for over 40 years. Roman Catholicism is to Brazil what Lutheranism is to Scandinavia, i.e. old churches that serve a s a buffé caterer for baptisms, marriages and funerals. Nobody cares what they say.

Actually, I think it´s more amazing that people would think Brazil to be a sexually repressive place when we´ve all probably seen images of what Carnival in Rio de Janeiro looks like.
