Are people forgetting about Kamala Harris? Last I checked she was black and our Senator from 2016 to 2020 and cruised to an easy win despite all the supposed anti-black women racism going on. And her opponent in the race was an Hispanic woman. Three of our 52 Representatives in Congress are black women: Maxine Waters, Barbara Lee and Sydney Kamlager-Dove (that's 6% which is well above the 2.5% stat). We also have black women running our two biggest cities... London Breed in SF and Karen Bass in LA, both who campaigned and ran on their own. Not to mention other mayors and high ranking officials who are black women.

Congrats. You just proved that qualified Black women are everywhere in California. They aren't rare at all. Clearly, their share of the population is a non-issue related to their competence if they can get such positions when Republicans are busy gerrymandering and constantly criticizing them over nothing. Their availability, competence, and perseverance are clear from your examples.

Its actually a little paternalistic and racist IMHO to think black women need special appointments to high positions because they can't succeed on their own (because whitey is keeping them down...er something?). Perhaps that would have been appropriate decades ago, but do we need to do it now?

You seem to have ignored the question from earlier. Why MTG? Clearly, not qualified. What are the real criteria:

So one must wonder...what are the real criteria that are used to elect people? Why is a set of criteria that is not in use always brought up whenever someone says something like "you know we really should have more X type people?"

That's rather like complaining that Sarah Palins are seriously underrepresented in the Alaska governorship. There would be a black woman in the Senate if she hadn't quit.

(And, de facto, she's still in the Senate. She still has a vote, even if the Senate makes a meaningless display of not counting it except when it will affect whether a bill passes...)

It it were n=1, it would still be an under representation.

Since she's president of the Senate, black women are the only intersectional demographic with representation in the Senate. Everybody else there represents only the people of their own states, not any demographic group.
