Whoa. That's bizarre.

Who ever heard of a gun manufacturer that cares about anything other than causing the deaths of as many Americans as possible?

It makes sense in terms of providing for the long term success of the company. With fewer gun owners than ever, they can see the backlash coming, and need to win over some people who might not own guns, but could be convinced to support the 2nd amendment if they can reinforce the narrative of the responsible gun owner. I can hear the jingle now "Smith and Wesson: the responsible gun manufacturer, for the responsible gun owner."

To be fair, S&W don't care about causing deaths either way. They care about selling as many guns as possible, and whether or not those guns cause deaths is a matter of complete indifference to them. As long as you buy one of their guns, they don't give a flying fuck whether or not it ever gets used.

If positioning themselves as a 'safety conscious' gun maker allows them to take market share off other gun makers, then pretending to care is a sound strategy.
