Who genuinely gives a shit?
Me? and some other people...

I haven't read the novels with the exception of the book for A New Hope. It was exactly the same as the movie. Other than that, I've just seen the movies. Granted I've seen them many times, including going twice to see the latest in the theater but it's not like I understand these people on the Internets talking about "canon" or do I necessarily believe everything they claim. This claim, though, has got my attention exactly because it is relevant to the movies and there is some evidence in the movies.

Everyone who saw Revenge of the Sith has heard of Darth Plagueis. I am sure many have forgotten the name in particular but the story of the power of the force should be remembered by most.
The Emperor told Anakin about the tragedy of Darth Plagueis The Wise during an opera:
Palpatine: Did you ever hear the Tragedy of Darth Plagueis the Wise?
Anakin: No.
Palpatine: I thought not. It's not a story the Jedi would tell you. It's a Sith legend. Darth Plagueis was a Dark Lord of the Sith so powerful and so wise, he could use the Force to influence the midi-chlorians to create...life. He had such a knowledge of the Dark Side, he could even keep the ones he cared about...from dying.
Anakin: He could actually...save people from death?
Palpatine: The dark side of the Force is a pathway to many abilities some consider to be unnatural.
Anakin: What happened to him?
Palpatine: He became so powerful, the only thing he was afraid of was losing his power...which, eventually of course, he did. Unfortunately, he taught his apprentice everything he knew. Then his apprentice killed him in his sleep. Ironic. He could save others from death...but not himself.
Anakin: Is it possible to learn this power?
Palpatine: Not from a Jedi.
It was significant because Darth Plagueis could control midichlorians to create life and to stop death. That could have been a reference to Anakin's birth, but in any case it was a definite impact on the plot because one of the reasons Anakin turned to the Dark Side was to save Padme's life using that power to stop death. Remember he had nightmares about her death.
The Emperor later tries to convince Anakin to learn the dark side to save the one he loves:
Palpatine: My mentor taught me everything about the force - even the nature of the dark side.
Anakin: You know the dark side?!
Palpatine: Anakin, if one is to understand “the great mystery” one must study all its aspects, not just the dogmatic narrow view of the Jedi. If you wish to become a complete and wise leader, you must embrace a larger view of the force. Be careful of the Jedi Anakin.. only through me can you achieve a power greater than any jedi! Learn to know the dark side of the force and you’ll be able to save your wife from certan death.
Anakin: What did you say?
Palpatine: Use my knowledge, I beg you!
Palpatine's "mentor" could very well be Darth Plagueis because (1) he told Palpatine everything about the force, consistent with the tragedy of Darth Plagueis and (2) he gave this satisfied, proud, evil smile when telling how Plagueis's apprentice killed him in his sleep.
Anakin tells Mace Windu about it... Then, later, after Mace Windu is killed:
Darth Sidious: You are fulfilling your destiny, Anakin. Become my apprentice. Learn to use the dark side of the Force. There's no turning back now.
Anakin Skywalker: I will do whatever you ask. Just help me save Padme's life. I can't live without her. If she dies, I don't know what I will do.
Then later:
Padmé: Anakin, I was so worried about you! Obi-Wan... told me terrible things!
Anakin Skywalker: What things?
Padmé: He said... you turned to the Dark Side. That you... killed Younglings!
Anakin Skywalker: Obi-Wan is trying to turn you against me.
Padmé: He cares about us.
Anakin Skywalker: Us?
Padmé: He knows. He wants to help you. Anakin, all I want is your love.
Anakin Skywalker: Love won't save you, Padme. Only my new powers can do that!
Padmé: But at what cost? You're a good person, don't do this!
Anakin Skywalker: I won't lose you the way I lost my mother. I am becoming more powerful than any Jedi has ever dreamed of, and I'm doing it for you. To protect you.
