After months of mystery and teases, it looks like our first real details on the actual ‘Star Wars: Episode 7‘ plot made their way online … hopefully … maybe. Although this leak only describes the plot in the vaguest sense possible, know that these are potential spoilers and that you should steer away if you want to go in completely blind.
The news comes from Badass Digest‘s Devin Faraci, who cites multiple sources and is generally reliable when it comes to scoops like this. Still, take all of this with a grain of salt until some kind of official confirmation arrives … and that may take awhile. Director J.J. Abrams sure loves his whole “Mystery Box” approach to moviemaking and movie marketing.
So, without further ado, here’s the reported basic outline of the ‘Star Wars: Episode 7′ plot:
Imagine the standard ‘Star Wars’ crawl, and when it ends the camera pans up to the stars. But instead of a spaceship zooming into frame we see… a hand! A severed hand, tumbling through space. A severed hand gripping a light saber.
That hand falls onto a desert planet, where it is discovered by characters who will be our heroes. One is Daisy Ridley. The other is John Boyega, who is playing someone trying to change his path in life (again, I’m keeping it vague here). They recognize the light saber as a Jedi relic and decide to return it to the proper people.
From there, Ridley and Boyega’s characters venture into space, meet up with Han Solo and Chewbacca (who are not piloting the Millennium Falcon!), both realizing that the hand and the lightsaber belong to the one and only Luke Skywalker, who hasn’t been seen since the events of ‘Return of the Jedi’ 30 years earlier. This crew of new and old heroes embark on a quest to find Luke and soon find themselves facing down an enemy with a weapon capable of destroying entire solar systems.
As the original report points out, it sounds like the film deliberately mimics the broad outline of the original ‘Star Wars’: heroes on a desert planet encounter something special that sends them on a quest, where they meet up with Han Solo and face down a weapon of incredible power. Abrams is nothing if not nostalgic in his approach to storytelling, after all.
