Surveillance video shows Lakeland city commissioner shooting alleged shoplifter

Ya, that’s not self defence. The guy was trying to leave and he shot him from behind while in absolutely no danger.

This was an act of murder ... but it is Florida, so who knows?

Well, he shouldn't have been shoplifting.

At 24 seconds, while although trying to exit, the suspect is turned sideways with hatchet in hand.

But, let's say he ran and it was a clear shot in the back. Why must a threat be immenient to demonstrate justification? For instance, a failure to 'unjustly' kill could lead to short-term mortal retaliation. I've watched a lot of monster movies. People who have the chance and don't take it are often killed later. What we need are more good guys getting killed by returning sociopaths. That way, what seems unjust would be seen more favorably. So, let the monsters get away and hopefully these hatchet-thieves will successfully kill the 'bad guys,' making them then good guys and the thieves bad guys instead of the hatchet-thieving victims but instead monsters. You liberals don't watch enough horror flicks.

I dunno. The guy was clearly trying to leave. The store owner shot him because - I guess - he wanted to keep him for the police. Difficult to defend, indeed. 2nd degree murder, probably.

Use of his gun was uncalled for IMO. Suspect was not attacking the shooter, but was trying to move away from him. Shooter tried to pull suspect towards himself, so shooter is responsible for distance closing. Suspect holding a stolen hatchet doesn't justify shooting him IMO, because the suspect wasn't using the hatchet in a manner signified he was going to attack. Suspect should have been arrested by the police but should not have been killed.

He should have stolen from a store with a "no chase" (and presumably no shoot) policy.

A clear cut case of a dangerous and violent criminal backing into several gunshots from an obviously terrified armed citizen.

Do I have to say that's sarcasm?

Florida official who hosted pro-gun protest against Parkland teen activists caught on video killing shoplifting suspect

I suspect that this vermin will get off free, because the victim was a latino "transient agricultural worker". This is clearly murder...

Florida commissioner who opposed gun control protests spurred on by the school shooting in Parkland was caught on video shooting and killing a suspected shoplifter at his military surplus store.

The Tampa Bay Times reported that on October 3, Lakeland Commissioner Michael Dunn shot 50-year-old Cristobal Lopez after the man allegedly stole a hatchet from Dunn’s Vets Army Navy Surplus shop in the Tampa suburb.

Police released the security footage of the incident after questions arose whether the commissioner was justified in shooting Lopez.

Dunn reportedly confronted the alleged shoplifter and asked if he was going to pay for the hatchet he tried to pocket. In the surveillance video, the commissioner is seen grabbing Lopez’s shirt and fires at least once before the man falls to the pavement just outside the store’s door, shakes for a moment, then falls limp.

Well that parking lot shooter is being tried for manslaughter, so this probably shouldn't be much different.
