Even if they told themselves it was because of religion the reasons they gave, like the US presence near religious locations, and the Israeli occupation, were political.
It got a stupid president to take the bait and start a major war in the region, actually two wars.
Neither of which have been won.
In one we end with ISIS and are still fighting it and the other we are still fighting in Afghanistan.
And now we have an even stupider president. A thin skinned ignoramus that lacks self control and any knowledge of history.
But for political, not religious reasons.

Um, why not? That was part of the tragedy. But the New York attacks got WAY more press than the crashed plane or the Pentagon. This looks to be part of an effort to improve the memorial to the victims.
Um, if you don't know who did it, how do you know what their religion is, and how would you establish that what they did hurt their religion rather than islam?

Yes, they intended to harm Muslims. That doesn't mean they weren't Muslims themselves.
The terrorist groups have two basic objectives:
1) Make the Middle East such a quagmire that the great powers of the world will leave them alone. This is a result of Desert Storm where they saw that we would not put up with conquests over there that would result in too big a power block. They see us as a paper tiger that can be run off, they don't understand that that only applies so long as the gloves are on.
2) Drive a wedge between Islam and the rest of the world. It's a competition for hearts and minds and they can't win it fairly--the average Muslim prefers what we have to offer vs what the extremists have to offer. Thus they must make us fear the Muslims and the Muslims fear non-Muslims to lessen the attractiveness of western ways to the man on the street over there.

Wow, that's a pretty nutty conspiracy theory you have there.
If the goal was to harm Islam, then there are a large number of much simpler and cheaper things that could have been done to achieve that goal. This is the one thing that conspiracy theory proponents never seem to take into account.
There simpler explanation is that it was done by Muslim extremists.
At any given moment, there are a large number of missing extremists calling for the killing of non-Muslims just as there are always Christian extremists around agitating for the same thing.

9/11 Truther stuff is par for the course in much of the Islamic world, no surprise there. If you've read the Koran, then you know there needs to be no logical connection between what you're trying to believe and evidence. It's even worse in that book than the bible.

It means what it says in the broader context. It is another instruction on how to deal with opponents, but in a specific context.
2.190. Fight against those who fight against you in the way of Allah, but do not transgress, for Allah does not love transgressors.
2.191. Kill them whenever you confront them and drive them out from where they drove you out. (For though killing is sinful) wrongful persecution is even worse than killing. Do not fight against them near the Holy Mosque unless they fight against you; but if they fight against you kill them, for that is the reward of such unbelievers.
2.192. Then if they desist, know well that Allah is Ever-Forgiving, Most Compassionate.
2.193. Keep on fighting against them until mischief ends and the way prescribed by Allah prevails. But if they desist, then know that hostility is only against the wrong-doers.
Other verses, which I have already quoted, deal with non believers both in general and in specific situations (as in the verse above).
There are numerous verses instructing the faithful on attitude toward unbelievers and how they should be dealt with.

I think the intent by a small band of fanatics was to propel their own brand of Islam. Reasonable and mainstream Muslims would be among the first to go.

Muslims did it. And they did Taliban, Shabazz, Boko Haram, Hezbollah, Isis and many other terrorist organizations killing people. Like in Pakistan where another bomb killed many at a Shiite mosque.
Thanks to Islam, a number of Moslem nations are now smoking ruins. With no relief in sight. Islam is a scourge. It's fruits are obvious and not good.
True Muslims are proud of it. Terror and Sword is what keeps Islam together.
Undoubtedly taking the initiative in fighting has a great effect in spreading Islam and bringing people into the religion of Allaah in crowds. Hence the hearts of the enemies of Islam are filled with fear of jihad.
[al-Baqarah 2:251] 2 – Allaah has commanded us to prepare the means of fighting against the kuffaar and frightening them.
When the Messenger called people to Islam, his call was accompanied by the sword, and he commanded his leaders to do likewise, so that when the people saw the serious of the Muslims in calling people to their religion, that dispelled any confusion.
Islam spread by means of proof and evidence to those who listened to the message and responded to it, and it spread by means of force and the sword to those who were stubborn and arrogant, until they were overwhelmed and became no longer stubborn, and submitted to that reality.
