What are Asian Americans doing right?

Asian Americans have the highest average income of any racial group in the U.S.

Asian Americans regularly rank first amongst academic achievement in the U.S.

Asian Americans have the lowest representation in the U.S. prison population.

Ninja training. They can avoid the cops and break into the principal's office to up their scores.

Nobody complains about it because they're ninjas.

For some reason, us white people have decided not to keep the Asians down like we do with the other races. Initially, I thought it was because us white people hate the darker skinned races, but there are many dark skinned Indians (from India) who are extremely successful (anyone watched a spelling bee lately?). Maybe us whites don't hate them as much for some reason. I dunno. It's just one of those mysteries.

No, no. Someone screwed up and taught them the secret handshake. :angryfist: Or it could be due to culture and IQ. I mean. . . hey look, a squirrel!

That must be it! Somehow, the Asians infiltrated the secret underground racist white people communication network. Bastards....

That's an ugly racist stereotype. Not all asians are perverts, only the Japs!

Well, you've got to give them credit for being innovative when it comes to anime porn:

Japanese Game Simulates Sex !! Oculus Rift Sex Simulator !!

Intelligence has something to do with it, as Asian Americans have an IQ of about 106, but it isn't all. James Flynn made the point (uncontested as far as I am aware) that Asian Americans have an average income as though their average IQ is 121. There is a stereotype that Asians are good at math. Turns out it is not just a stereotype. Not only are they significantly better at math than whites, but it is a talent underestimated in the "performance" component of IQ tests (the component that normally reflects math ability). Mathematical ability would give them an advantage in the higher-income STEM jobs. I have no good explanation for the higher math ability among Asians. I suspect it is genetic, but the hereditarian models of race and intelligence do not explain it.

The standardized math tests are obviously biased in favor of Asians.

Most of the math questions involve things like "How many egg rolls you get if you order one dish from Column A and 2 from Column B?"

You have the wit of a Japanese-American friend of mine (yep, he breaks the stereotype. Average at academics, but has a robust talent at jokes and humor).

I am curious about Flynn's point. It is true that international IQ comparisons show a national Chinese IQ average of 106 BUT Chinese immigrants to the US are a self-selected group (many from the more accomplished stratas). And because immigrants tend to be individuals of higher IQ than the population of origin, it would be interesting to know the details of Flynn's observation.

Was that always true, though?

I think something to look at isn't just each part of the puzzle, but the whole picture.

The three Asian advantages that I cited in the OP reinforce one another.

One has to wonder, though, how this cycle of achievement started—where and when did it begin?

How did a population of people who came to this country as 'gooks' and 'coolies' to serve as, essentially, slave labor in building the infrastructure of the western U.S. rise to the top of the pile, overtaking even the white majority in the most meaningful measures of life achievement?

I would propose culture before genetics as a reason for Asian success. I wouldn't rule out genetics; it just wouldn't be my first guess.

For example, some cultures have/encourage behaviors that tend to land their members in prisons. Other cultures have/encourage behaviors that tend to keep their members out of prison.

The same could be said about education: some cultures value education more than others and so their members tend to attain higher levels of education than others.

And staying out of prison and doing well in school are probably all that's needed to explain the third advantage: higher average incomes.

I'd be interested to hear what role you think genetics plays. I have read some of your opinions related to this in other threads (I lurk more than I post ;) ), but I don't know them well enough to see how you'd apply them to this question.

This is entirely culturally based.

Actually, I'm not sure it's purely culture. I'm thinking of China: They had a long period of relative peace and a society where you could advance based on intelligence. That would tend to select for intelligence. On the other hand you have places like Cambodia where an awful lot of the intelligent people were executed. That would select for stupidity.

The only genetic advantage Asians have is better looking women ;)

Yup, although to me it's only the ones from the temperate climates.

Yeah--immigrants tend to be of above-average IQ--but the slaves didn't come here voluntarily and thus didn't have that selection pressure. I wonder if this is a big enough effect to be measurable.

Does anyone have a link that quantifies how whites living in China, Japan, South Korea, measure up against the indigenous populations?

My first guess is genetics. Culture can take you so far but if individuals can differ in their natural abilities and talents, so can groups of individuals, obviously.
