The Boston Tea Party

Never mind the poor choice of words in the last sentence, the point is that there is zero chance that the United States were ever going to appoint a monarch over their new nation, unless it was George III himself.
Why King George III? Especially after a war to throw off his rule.

There are two possibilities: inviting in some member of some royal or noble family, or promoting someone local. The most likely candidate IMO was George Washington, and he was the latter sort of candidate.

Because he was the ruler of Great Britain... accepting his rule would have been a condition of returning to that state. This was actually considered, ending the rebellion, in the early years. Especially in New York, there was much support for the idea of a negotiated peace.

But as for installing some invented monarch to rule over the new confederacy, that notion was never, as far as I know, seriously considered.

There were people who, at the founding of our government, advocated establishing a king and a royal lineage, John Adams was one of several that favored it. It was suggested that George Washington be crowned as our first king. Thankfully, uncle Gorge would hear nothing of it.

"If you suppose that I have ever had a design or desire of attempting to introduce a government of King, Lords and Commons, or in other words an hereditary Executive, or an hereditary Senate, either into the government of the United States, or that of any individual state, in this country, you are wholly mistaken. There is not such a thought expressed or intimated in any public writing or private letter of mine, and I may safely challenge all of mankind to produce such a passage and quote the chapter and verse."

Back to the Herbal Tea Party, AOC has had much more success than Dave Brat, despite a similar triumph over an incumbent. The two have something else in common: AOC majored in economics and DB was an economics professor.

AOC has also been involved in activism that somewhat resembles the original Tea Party, but without destruction of property. Delivering supplies to the Standing Rock protesters, and dropping in on a sit-in in Nancy Pelosi's office.

Best explanation ever into the actual causes of the original tea party:

https://www.thomhartmann.com/blog/2009/04/real-boston-tea-party-was-against-wal-mart-1770s

The Real Boston Tea Party was Against the Wal-Mart of the 1770s
The real Boston Tea Party was a protest against huge corporate tax cuts for the British East India Company, the largest trans-national corporation then in existence. This corporate tax cut threatened to decimate small Colonial businesses by helping the BEIC pull a Wal-Mart against small entrepreneurial tea shops, and individuals began a revolt that kicked-off a series of events that ended in the creation of The United States of America.

And yes. The tea party had NOTHING to do with the King. And yes, corporate tyranny was (and presently is) real. When corporations become people and have more control over the government than the people, there's is going to be a big problem. People naturally want to be free and not slaves on the plantation of slavelandia of the US.

On another note. If you follow the money, you will generally be able to find the source of just about every war that has ever been waged in the history of humanity. People can and do get pissed off over religion but they don't start dying until the almighty dollar gets involved.

Too bad the colonies didn't stay with the British until the Brits ended slavery through force.

If that would have also included colonies having seats in Parliament that would have been even better.

Here is a recent event that seems to me to be in the spirit of the Boston Tea Party.

In 2017, eight climate-change activists got together and created the Sunrise Movement, and over the next year, the SM recruited more members and studied activist efforts over the decades. A lot had happened since that 1773 destruction of tea shipments, so the SM people could get a good idea of what works and what doesn't.

On Tue 2018 Nov 6, the Democrats won a majority of the House of Representatives, even if not the Senate, and Nancy Pelosi would likely become its Speaker, its presiding officer, again. The SM people decided on a sit-in in NP's office next Monday to suggest to her her and other House leaders that it is necessary to get into action on climate change.

The SM people contact AOC about support, and she and her staff work out 2 pages of a draft Green New Deal resolution, along with a pledge to meet them.

On Mon Nov 12, some 200 SM activists camped out in St. Stephen's Episcopal Church in DC to spend the night, and AOC and Rashida Tlaib showed up to address them. AOC spoke from atop a table, wearing a tight skirt and high heels (!)

On Tue Nov 13, the activists went into action, going into a Capitol office building and doing a sit-in in NP's office and lining up on the sides of a nearby corridor. AOC shows up, high-fives them, praises them, and says that they are like the Standing Rock protesters that she had helped get supplies for nearly 2 years earlier. Some 50 of the activists are arrested. She said later that she was reluctant at first because of an upset stomach, but that she was impressed by how much they were willing to risk to do their protest. She also conceded that it was a career risk for her also, that she might not get in some good Congressional committees.

What might the original Tea Partiers have thought of this action? Aside from the enormously advanced technology, there were lots of social changes.

Women wearing knee-length skirts and dresses? (AOC and RT wore those) Pants? (many of the female participants wore those) Women using profanity? (it didn't say whether it was AOC or RT who referred to "Koch brother assholes") Female elected officials?

But that aside, I'll try to imagine how a liveblog of the Tea Party might go.

1773 Dec 16

Samuel Adams has convened another meeting on what to do about the tea crisis. To recap: the Crown has decreed that we may only buy tea from the British East India Company. Some of us have been buying tea from the Dutch, because it has been cheaper, but the Crown has now given a big tax break to the BEIC. We don't like how the Crown has been playing favorites, and playing favorites without consulting us. No taxation without representation!

We of the North American colonies have decided that we are not going to accept this. If the Crown gets away with this, then the Crown could play favorites with more companies and limit our choices even further.

We've gotten buyers to refuse to accept BEIC tea in New York, Philadelphia, and Charleston. Ships with BEIC tea have returned to Britain from New York and Philadelphia, and in Charleston, customs officers have seized the unclaimed tea. Governor Thomas Hutchinson has stubbornly refused to let the tea ships depart, and this is the last day that the Dartmouth, the first arrival, can stay without paying import duties.

Governor Hutchinson still will not let the ships depart, and Samuel Adams seems despairing. "This meeting can do nothing further to save the country." Some of the people are leaving early.

At the harbor, I've found about a hundred young men wearing disguises, and some of them are dressed as Mohawk Indians. What are they doing?

Those young men are going out to the three tea ships, the Dartmouth, the Eleanor, and the Beaver.

They've boarded the three ships, and they're looking for the tea shipments.

They're chopping open those chests of tea, and they're dumping the tea in the harbor.

(Three hours later)

The young men are now gone, and the harbor is full of tea chests and tea.

We checked the three ships, and the tea is all gone from them.

I dread the next morning. Governor Hutchinson isn't going to like this. The Crown isn't going to like this.

Vox? Not exactly the best source for unbiased information on the Tea Party.

Their proof that the Tea Party is 10 years old is a five year old article saying it is 5 years old. Think about that for a second.

There exist a few moribund organizations that bear the name. Vox thinks the movement started in November 2008 instead of November 2007. They don't know the subject above and beyond "this is scary", they aren't a reliable source.

We are used to seeing these kinds of posts here, demeaning an information source. Do you have a better source for the information on the tea parties?

I am not being argumentative nor am I defending Vox which I had never heard of outside of this board.
