The Expanse is cancelled

That's too bad. The series followed the book plots very closely, so those who want to know what happens after the last episode can just read the books.

This series was better done than most space operas. Part of that had to do with how well the SA Corey writing team handled the depiction of an alien intelligence. The special effects have been phenomenal, but I do wish that these shows would stop making things go boom and whoosh in the vacuum of space. They had to do a lot for the sake of drama--for example making it possible for ships to travel interplanetary distances quickly without crushing everyone to paste or reversing the flow of time.

note that alcon productions 100% produces and finances the show, syfy was just distributing it.
alcon says they are actively seeking another distributor for the show and have no desire to stop making it.

I was 2 books into the series when I first started watching the show and told myself I wouldn't let the appearance of the show characters become what I envisioned in the book. I'm in book 5 now and I'm seeing Cas Anvar, Wes Chatham and the rest in my head.
Good show, though!

Then that means Sci-Fi is like Japanese cartoons. The cartoons are always left unfinished so that you will go out and buy the comic books. :D

There are worse things than being in the sci-fi biz and being compared to anime, I guess.

WHAT?!!

Why aren't sci-fi's allowed to be slow but productive and honest on television? Heck, it isn't like The Expanse was as slow as Little Women.

I can appreciate that the production cost was likely high and if the ratings aren't there, it won't continue. Sounds like Season Three continued slipping with the ratings, because it was too sci-fyey or something. The Expanse was able to make that bridge between what is true sci-fi and what is something that is compelling enough to watch. This sucks!

DEAR AMC, There is a showing I think you could be interested in.

Seems a bit odd that the "Sci-Fi" channel (I know it is SYFY now) doesn't want to show it anymore. Though what the fuck else are they going to show?

They keep threatening to introduce wrestling to the lineup.

I seem to recall that hey changed the name to SyFy so that they could show something other than science fiction, which was an argument that I found odd. It's not as if History Channel changed their name to "Lumberjacks and Truckers Channel" when they stopped showing any history at all. I'm not sure why they wanted to branch out from science fiction and I'm not sure why they thought they needed a name change to do it.

Because Sci-Fi isn't mainstream. It is a niche programming platform. Granted, almost all of the niche channels have transitioned to higher rated and brain dissolving programming. Sundance, TLC, Sci-Fi, Discovery, History, Science, MTV, MTV2, VH-1. Food Network and Cooking at least are about cooking in some way, but it is more stupid competition crap than cooking.

About the only channels that haven't are Cartoon Network and TCM.

Sundance channel sucks ass. They chop the hell out of the movies they show.

Scifi channel changed its name to Syfy so they could trademark it. It's not like History channel is bound by their name to only have shows about history instead of "Ancient aliens", or that TLC is all about tables, ladders and chairs.

Back in the old days (60s and 70s), those of us who were into science fiction never called it "sci fi". We referred to it as "SF". Anyone who called it "sci fi" was looked down on as relatively uninformed about the genre. I don't know whether that is still the case among true SF mavens, but the more common usage is now used everywhere.

What makes The Expanse interesting, despite its glaring anti-science special effects (booming noises in vacuum), is that it is a good effort to portray a "hard science fiction" yarn in space opera form. Space operas are essentially dramas modeled primarily after popular literatures such as westerns, mysteries, and adventures. However, the venue here is some projection of a future that attempts to extrapolate from a perception modern technology or science. Soft science fiction is basically a fantasy story with scientific mumbo jumbo instead of magic or religion (e.g. Lord of the Rings). Most of what we see in the arts and media these days, to the extent that it could be called "science fiction", is of the soft variety. It makes little effort in the direction of realism.

TLC stands for "the learning channel."

That used to mean documentaries. Now it means brainless reality shows.

I was being facetious. ;) It might as well be a tables, ladders and chairs channel.

This is starting to look like another browncoat rebellion.
