Well, the logic is that they slipped Bannon onto the National Security Council while everyone was in an uproar over the ban. I expect if they attempted that move under normal circumstances it would have fallen under much greater scrutiny.
They'd have done that regardless. What I'm saying is, don't bother thinking in terms of how Trump is pulling off some headfake or anything - they are who we thought they were. Trump consolidating power? Well, why wouldn't a businessman try to do that? They weren't expecting the uproar over the muslim ban, that was just an example of their delusional view of the US and their basic inability to plan.
In normal times, we'd be talking about the mosque attack in Quebec, the failed raid in Yemen, and the like.
What has actually blown up? Have they faced any actual negative setback?
Market destabilization, Iraq blocking US passports, mass protests reignited, money pouring into groups like the ACLU, judges immediately saying "Uh, what the hell do you think you're doing?", the Monday night massacre, diplomats dissenting in record numbers, UK parliament in an uproar...the legislative branch moves slowly by design. Usually, the executive branch does as well, and they're finding out why. They aren't learning why, of course, because they'll simply refuse to learn - and Trump's basically incapable of learning.
