The Last Republican Debate Thread 12/15/2015

HEWITT: Of the three legs of the triad though, do you have a priority?
TRUMP: For me, nuclear, the power, the devastation, is very important to me.
The... The most important part of the nuclear triad is the nuclear?

Can't argue that... Try as I might, can't argue it.

I find it interesting the 1st Dem debate hit record highs, while the 2nd hit record lows.

The Republican debate is about who is going to be the nominee. The Democratic debate is about who is going to be President.

Most of the people in this country don't really care who gets elected, just so long as it's not one of the current GOP candidates.

Oddly, had that been the General Election debate, and Rubio was Clinton, she'd been attacked as a "know-it-all".

To be fair to Trump though, I don't believe I've ever heard the term before.

But you're not asking people to put you in charge of the US's nuclear arsenal. If you were, I'd expect you to know the terms used to refer to it. You wouldn't need to know all the details off the top of your head, but a general knowledge of how it's set up would be part of your job description. This is especially true if you're a genius who's, like, the most pro-military guy ever.

To know what the Triad is, in this context, a person would have to have been paying attention in the 70's and 80's, when we were trying to decide if our nuclear deterrent strategy was worth the money. It was sort of a big deal back then, but few people think about it these days.

If there hadn't been a clue that the Triad had something to do with nuclear weapons, Trump probably would have thought the question was about Chinese gangster movies.

This is going to be the last Republican debate thread? I'm so disappointed. :(

Being born in the late 70s, that'd excuse me. Can't speak for Trump though.

Continuing to be left out of the process by party decisions to require payments to get debates. NOTHING was broadcast over-air. And it was done after the library is closed, so I couldn't go there.

This is wrong.

Ya, if only there was some way to get a video of the event by livestreaming it from CNN's website or looking on that site or YouTube the next day. It sucks that those aren't options.

Not sure if you're kidding, but livestreaming when you don't have cable is often not a thing. 'Cause it's the cable that brings the broadband, yanno? And the Cable ain't here. And refuses to come here. So does the DSL refuse. And the FioS. Even the little electromagnectic spectrum waves from the cell towers refuse to visit my little patch of paradise. I have to climb 1/4 mile up hill through a field to get a signal.

And, of course, all that livestreaming is not free in any case, which is my main gripe. You cannot get it as it happens for free. Which a presidential debate should be. Free.

I can go to the library the following day, but then watching it with family is out, since the library is not open for 3 hours post-workday.

Meanwhile, we DO, every single one of us, get airwave TV. Including the 19 million who don't get cable and the 21 million who don't get broadband. It's my personal opinion that this is not too much to ask on behalf of over 6% of the US population who was closed out from viewing the debate because of corporate money.

Democracy accessible to all residents.

I don't know about replay, but for those without cable, for such events try http://cvinetwork.org/ to watch in real time.
CNN broadcast this but Fox also echoed the CNN feed.

For those of you without cable, this is a rather good resource to know about. Lots of new programs, MSNBC, CNN, CSPAN and others. Now you can watch Rachel Maddow for free.

That is good to know. It doesn't work without broadband internet, of course, but good to know for when I drive to the library to watch.

Trump == Palin with no chest, worse legs, after a very bad day at the salon....

Not sure if you're kidding ...

For future reference, if you're ever not sure about that, the answer is yes, I am.

Then there was this Christy moment:
When I stand across from King Hussein of Jordan and I say to him, ‘You have a friend again, sir, who will stand with you to fight this fight,’ he’ll change his mind.

That's gonna be difficult, since the guy's been dead for over a decade now.

Such a sorry state of affairs for the Republican party. These clown are their best and brightest?

Christie also said that he would have stopped the fake bomb threats yesterday that Obama and Clinton so incompetently failed to prevent because he once was a prosecutor, period. Under a President Christie administration, there will be no more fake bomb threats.

My favorite though was Ted Cruz invoking Reagan when arguing against amnesty.

I dunno. Christie conscripting a guy that's been dead for 16 years is hard to beat.

But, there was one point in the debate where Trump spoke about how Iraq was a waste, destabilized the entire region, and cost 4 trillion dollars that could have been spent at home on our infrastructure. And the room applauded. Think about that for a minute.

Ya, it's terrible how badly Obama dropped the ball on the whole Iraq thing.

To be fair to Trump though, I don't believe I've ever heard the term before.

Spot quiz: Someone asks your opinion of a term you've never heard before. Do you:
A) Ask him what the hell he means by 'triad?'
B) Make sure your answer includes the way you think he means the term ("Well, if by 'triad,' you mean our land, air and sea forces, i'd say...")
C) Just throw an answer out there and hope it looks presidential afterwards
