I just got back from Home Depot. Some halfwit in a Trump hat had to interrupt when I was checking out because he was worried about “those criminals” that just walked by. “They're all criminals” he said as he demanded the attention of the cashier that was scanning my items and interacting with my dog to break the boredom of a near empty store during the Super Bowl. I felt bad leaving her there because he was still going when we left.
From looking at the security measures I see in Home Depot I would say that "those criminals" are the tradespeople. Stuff aimed at the DIY crowd is generally much lower security than stuff aimed at those who do it for a living--and note that that includes the supplies they use even if they're fairly low value items (I'm thinking of the electrical aisle.)
Shrinkage is up. It just isn't at the apocalyptic levels Fox News wants people to believe they are.
I haven't noticed any appreciable increase in security. Electric has had monitoring for as long as I can remember, most tools were corralled long ago (but the separate checkout from the tool area hasn't been there for quite a while--you have to exit in plain view but with no barrier.) Most of the power tools you have to specifically ask for and another section has been growing in another aisle with some of the bigger tools (pressure washers, bigger battery-operated things and the like) are locked up, they escort you to the register.
