Oversimplified summary:

  • USB-C refers to the physical connector. Different devices can use different protocols, and not all cables work with all protocols.
  • The USB-C connector is supposed to include safeguards that keep your device from being fried if, say, you were to try to charge your phone with your laptop charger. Many cable manufacturers cut corners and fail to include those failsafes, so accidentally plugging your device into the wrong thing can permanently brick your device.
    • When purchasing a USB-C cable, read the user reviews carefully.
