The purpose of religion is to control female sexuality. Naturally women choose their partners. They mate with the man of their choice. And when they want to. Man invented religion to destroy that freedom. They developed the concept of god so they could claim a higher law that allowed them to be in control over a woman’s sexual choice. That’s why marriages in the ancient world were generally arranged. Up until recently a man could not be convicted of raping his wife. The Bible requires a woman to marry her rapist, or condemns her to death if she fails to cry out in a rape. She can’t engage in sex without permission of the male patriarchy.

This is why abortion is a religious issue and not a political one.

I started a thread on a related issue. Judaism and Christianity control a man's sexuality, but as you say they control a woman's sexuality to an even greater degree. You may have noticed that both Old and New Testaments make a fuss over adultery. I think this obsession with keeping married men and women's sexual activity confined to their spouses is rooted in polygamy. Many of the Jewish men at those times had more than one wife which resulted in wives needing to share their husbands with other women. Frustrated and lonely, it's not difficult to see why many of those women may have gotten sexually involved with other men who, possibly being too poor to marry or who had difficulty finding women due to polygamy, were eager to have women including those lonely wives.

It all makes sense in light of evolution. Men who can monopolize sexual access to women are more likely to reproduce and pass down their genes to offspring. If God exists, then his laws support sexual selection. He must be very concerned about the survival of the fittest genes.
