The Religion Of Libertarianism

If I may present Exhibit A: our current American president. In what function of government is his "expertise" sufficient?

Hopefully some of his other supervisors have noticed his deficit of expertise as well, and will help pink-slip him in 2020.

Sure. Even the most diligent homeowner sometimes finds out too late that the tradesman they hired is incompetent.

And some fools even keep on bringing back the same guy who fucked up before. There's never been a world shortage of either incompetence nor foolishness.

Yes, which means that politicians aren't necessarily experts and should not be treated as such unless and until they demonstrate it. And at least here in America, I think the only expertise they share as a class is an extraordinary talent for bullshitting people.

...I'd like to see evidence other than Fox News.
Why are you watching Fox News? It’s like watching gay porn with men sucking off Trump....not that there’s anything wrong with that. If that’s what floats your boat, I’ll support your right to do it, but it’s, literally, not my taste. I suggest mixing up your viewing. BBC, USA Today and CNN are my main sources, but I’ll use other internet news sources to cross-check information.

Sadly, it seems that too many political extremists are lacking in critical thinking skills....of course mixing political extremism and critical thinking is like mixing oil and water.

You could be right. But in a representative democracy you get the politicians the voters choose.

If their selection criterion is 'best bullshitter', then you will get great bullshitters.

Politicians are supposed to be selected for their ability to make good law, and to make good executive decisions. If you choose an electrician based on how pretty his business cards are, while ignoring his lack of accreditation or qualifications, and his history of endangering his customers, then really you have only yourself to blame if your house burns down due to his shoddy workmanship.

Being allowed to continue doing the job IS treating your politicians like experts - whether they deserve it or not.

Expertise is about ability, not respect. And the public measurement of a politician's abilities is his ability to get elected.
