The electoral college went in Trump's favor. The plurality of Americans selected the other person and currently Trump is acting as if he won 1972 style. That is why people are protesting. No, if not enough people voted, it's no use complaining. Those who chose to vote did so and the election went in Trump's favour.
The US system as I understand is based on who wins the most States. Winning the most states may not mean winning the most votes. In Europe most countries have a systems based on the most votes amongst the parties. Then if one party does not over 50% there is another vote between the 2 parties who got the highest votes. So the one who gets 50% wins.
The USA is divided into different states with their own states each with its own governments. Coupled with this of course is the Electoral system. The U.S.A governments could always change the system through electoral reforms.
In the UK meanwhile the system is first past the post. He Tories won more than 50% of the seats with 36.9% of the votes. The UKIP which moved into third place won 1 seat with 12.6% of the vote. In fact they increased it from 3.1% and actually lost one seat.
So the UK system is considered worse. The Liberals who only got 7.9% of the vote ended up with 8 seats
So the system in the UK seems even more unfair.
