The sex offender registry--worse than I thought

I have long said there's a big baby-with-the-bathwater problem with the sex offender registry but this shows the problem is far worse--the most likely age to get on it is 14. There's a reason we treat juvenile offenses differently!

Damn, unless a 14 year old is doing crazy shit shit to someone younger than 12 they should not be on the registry. And for juveniles it should be until 18-21 or so that they are on it followed by a reassessment.

I wonder what the BLM position is in putting any guys 23 and younger on these registries (or pubishing them at all), especially if they committed sex crimes against women, given that they want to eliminate the criminalization of behavior for those 23 and younger.

Their heads must be exploding at the cognitive dissonance.

Any publicly available register of offenders is a symptom of a badly broken system.

If an offender is rehabilitated and it is safe to release them, then they should not be stigmatized in this way. If an offender is incapable of rehabilitation, they should never be released from a secure facility. If an offender is capable of being, but has not yet been, rehabilitated, then they should remain in a secure facility and provided with the necessary conditions to become a safe and productive citizen again (at which point they can be released).

Being on a sex offender's register is not freedom; nor is it imprisonment. It is a 'worst of both worlds' situation that serves neither the public, the victims nor the offenders. Everyone loses. Such registers should simply not exist at all.
