The SOTU

I mean, you're here to present the "deplorable" defense of a guy who bankrupted casinos...a business where people just come into the building and hand you money. How do you screw that up?
Actually, it's surprising the financial trouble casinos have.

Building those fancy casinos is expensive. It's a narrow line between spending too much on the atmosphere and not spending enough to attract the customers. And they tend to fall off with economic changes.

That's why Trump cratered his father's business empire. He thought that he couldn't lose by getting into the casino business, because "the house always wins". So he sank his father's fortune into the casino business and ended up with six separate bankruptcies in the 1990s. He was always an idiot when it came to running a business, because he was too lazy and stupid to run what he inherited. After that, he ended up making money off of being a celebrity and selling his family name as a brand. Banks swallowed the scam and bankrolled him until they had too much to lose if they didn't keep him afloat. The man had no head for business, but he did have a talent for grifting people. In fact, if he is in any sense a genius, it is in that area. He is the most successful grifter in history, rising to take over the administration of the richest nation on the planet. All hat and no cattle.

^^^That, well said. But Trump's rise also makes you revise your estimate of the literacy and education level of the general population. I mean, talk about obvious, obvious levels of deceit and madness and malice.

Yup. It totally amazes me that there are more than four people in the entire Country who have heard him speak for more than ten seconds, and still don’t know beyond the shadow of a doubt that he’s a lying scumbag.

The thing is, they like the effect of his lies, the reality of how he may have accomplishment despite being scum.

It is a shining example that scummy people have a chance at being great [pains in everyone else's asses].

Not all scumbags are without skills and talents. Donald Trump is, if anything, a talented entertainer. People in his audiences hang on every word, but they want to hear what kind of outrageous thing he is going to say next. So he spends lots of time on favorite routines, such as assigning humiliating labels to his enemies and inventing colorful stories about his triumphs and miseries. He clearly loves to play to an audience, and that is what makes him dangerous in a presidential so-called "debate". That is always a media event, where he has an opportunity to humiliate his opponent in public. Nobody can forget how he followed Hillary Clinton around on the debate stage and loomed over her, making it impossible for anyone to actually listen to or think about what she was saying. All you wanted from her was for her to turn around and put him in his place, but she didn't quite know how to deal with his antics.

I'm not sure how well Trump would be able to dominate Biden as a performance artist onstage this time around. He didn't succeed as well with Biden as he had with Clinton last time, but that was possibly because he couldn't physically approach Biden during the COVID scare. (Trump was actually sick with COVID at the time, IRRC.) This time around, the press would focus on every slip of the tongue by both men, who would be under tremendous pressure. Both men get easily provoked, but Biden has a lot more dignity to lose, since Trump would come out the victor in any shouting match.

Yeah, that was when she lost the election. Had she stopped, turned around and called him out on the carpet right then, she’d have won the election. Just like Joe did when he finally yelled “WILL YOU SHUT UP, MAN!”

When he does that shit, it’s an opportunity. If you pass on the opportunity, you lose.

If Hillary had done that, she would be labeled a bitchy petulant woman.

I TOTALLY and vehemently (if caps didn’t already say that) disagree. A few may have, but they would be the trumpsuckers.
I don’t believe it would matter who you are - if you smacked Trump down, you’d gain more fans than you’d lose.

I work retail as manager of a shoe and clothing store. Believe me, the things you hear from the general public will make you have no faith in people. Stupidity rules, selfishness is the name of the game. Cheating and conning successfully is regarded as legitimate success and whoever can argue to just argue is regarded as the winner.
