Threats to prevent Russian athletes from competing.

Golly, now I am really confused. Is not having an ideology kind of like having an ideology?
No. Is not having a religion kind of having a religion?

Wrong forum for this debate. There is a freethought htread somewhere on philosophy.
I replied to your contention.
And contentiously at that. I ascribe to freethought. Try to avoid being limited by -isms and -ologiesi as much as possible and look at issues without preconceptions.

That's your misunderstanding and misfortune. Obviously you do not appreciate the fact that not having any preconceptions is a preconception. Bald really is a hairstyle and a hair color.

Get it now?

As a matter of policy we have never officially condemned the displacement of Palestinians to make way for Israeli settlements. Saudi Arabia is our 'friend' despite an abysmally oppressive system simply because they have a lot of oil and Iran is their enemy. SA is worse than Putin's Russia.

Dual standards is the name of the game in politics

Indeed it is a political game a lot of the time but sometimes these types of actions do have a positive influence, part of the pressure that lead to the eventual dismantling of Apartheid in South Africa.

This is taking it too far.

New York’s Russian Restaurants Feel War’s Impact - NY Times

Russian restaurants in New York City have a public relations problem. Even though many of the owners are openly against the war, or are even Ukrainian, they are getting burned by reservation cancellations, social media campaigns and bad reviews online at a time when restaurants, in general, are still reeling from the shutdowns and restrictions of Covid-19. Some places have even been vandalized.

If you had a nightclub called Hitler's German Hideaway in 1944 you'd have the same toxic name problem, even if you hated the guy and played great music. Likewise for Hirohito's Burgers or Mussolini's Bakery. If I were the owners I'd be doing some name changing and some PR because people are people. Get the word out, get some popular names in attendance, get your ass in gear or lose your business.

Evgeny Rylov, a Russian swimmer who won two gold medals at the Toyko Olympics, was banned from the sport for 9 months for attending a pro-war rally in March. Good riddance.

There is quite a large movement to ban Russian athletes and musicians worldwide. I understand. If it were me, I'd only ban the citizens who support the war. If you're such a piece of shit that you'd celebrate the killing of civilians and taking of their land; you deserve to be banned.

The below is a more nuanced article regarding boycotting Russians:

Russian pianist Alexander Malofeev, who is 20 years old and born in Moscow has been banned. He did issue a statement on his facebook page: “The truth is that every Russian will feel guilty for decades because of the terrible and bloody decision that none of us could influence and predict.” But the banned remained.

I agree with the writer that there are dangerous parrels to the current banning of Russians to interned Japanese in America in WW2. But I think that it's insane to describe Malofeev's statement above as "groveling" as the writer does. It's not groveling. It's demonstrating that he's a human.

Again, I would only ban those who specifically support Putin in any way. The Japanese weren't just "banned" in the US. They had the possessions stolen from them, and they were interned in camps.

The problem with this approach is whether they did so willingly or they were forced to.

That's not our problem. I feel bad for those Russians who feel that they must support Putin. It's a shitty deal for them, but the reality is that we are responsible for our government. And Putler probably won't stop killing people until he is dethroned. Many people think that Putin dosn't care how his citizens feel about him. This is very clearly not the case. He has spent enormous resources taking over all social media and crushing any anti-Putin voices. The war in Eastern Europe will continue until Putin is dethroned. That can only be done by Russians.

I know it's hard for you to understand but it's a matter of fact that denazification operation is supported by 70% of the population in Russia. The rest 30% have property abroad or simply pacifists in general. There is virtually zero support for Ukrainian regime in Russia.
You are being misinformed by MSM.

Actually, I totally agree with you that the Russians believe that the west are all Nazis. Too many in the west make excuses for the Russian people and blame all this on Putin. Russians want land. They want to expand. They want to blow up buildings and kill civilians. Very good chance that Russian will be stopped in Ukraine. But if not, their imperialist hordes will next invade Moldova, then Finland, then Sweden and etc. The civilized world (not just the west) needs to keep sending weapons and aid to Ukraine; do everything possible to bankrupt Russia; and then boycott Russian's supporting the war. Having said all that, I do feel bad for the Russians that want peace.

That's because propaganda works. Just because people believe lies doesn't make the lies the truth.

Of course there's no support, Russia controls the propaganda.

The reality is there are far more Nazis in Moscow than Kyiv. This is purely a war of aggression, it's not denazification.

Bush II had a similar level of support for his 2003 Invasion of Iraq.

It didn't work out particularly well. But the fact remains that his base supported it for years.

Well, that's makes things easier. Fuck those war crime enablers. They deserve everything they get.

Putin's besty runs the Wagner group, the mercenary army that is considered Putin's personal army.

It's called the Wagner group because Richard Wagner was Hitler's favorite composer.

No, there's no nazis in Russia.

I don't disagree. 70% approval for invasion of Iraq was about right. Many dems supported it. I didn't. However, I don't remember the glee that the Russians seem to take in all the misery that they are causing in Ukraine. Americans support their troops. But I don't see as much cheering when civilians die during combat. IMO

Thought here--actually, both sides want the same thing: the denazification of Ukraine. It's just the Russians don't recognize that the Nazis in Ukraine are in Russian uniform.

You keep forgetting that this war YOU started and funded has being going on for at least 8 years. All the current misery is on you 100%. In fact you were counting on it.

We started??

Russia did it's usual stunt of funding puppets, have them claim to be a legitimate, oppressed government and come to their aid. The rest of the world sees what's happening.
