Trump Fires Air Safety Experts - What Could Possibly Go Wrong?

The helicopter was supposed to pass behind not below
And it was clearly not doing that and traffic controller clearly saw it clearly not doing it.
With hindsight, when ATC saw something was wrong, the ATC should have aborted the passenger landing and then excoriated the military aircraft. They trusted the military pilot too much.

I've watched some youtube with other military (I think) pilot comments. He implied that ATC systems raised an alarm meaning that there is an automated system which look for dangerous situations. Traffic controller should have been more assertive.
I think helicopter people were simply not paying attention to anything. They probably have completed this exercise countless number of times and nothing happened.

I wonder how rarely that particular Runway has been used. They say rarely, but how rarely?

A helicopter can hover at 200 to 400 feet in altitude or am I missing something?
I think the effect that bilby mentioned earlier might be getting underplayed. Maybe it had nothing to do with the whole thing, but...
If a helo is in the same path, but below a fixed wing plane, just how powerful is the downward "sucking" effect that would draw the plane downward? I can imagine a *bump* that would feel like a bit of turbulence momentarily relieving you of half your weight, terminated by a crash. But maybe the speed/weight/lift of the plane would be too great to have that much effect?
The helo was directed by ATC to fly behind the CRJ. From the radar videos I have seen it appeared that they turned into the path of the planes. Even if they assumed the next plane landing on Runway 1 was the one they were supposed to avoid it still looked like they were flying into its path not behind.
ATC saying behind implies that helicopter would simply stop and let CRJ pass toward Runway and then pass behind it.
helicopter I think thought that CRJ was using the other Runway and ignored what ATC was saying as being unnecessary cautious. ATC could have given helo more information stressing that rarely used Runway was being used.

ATC should not be so liberal with pilots requesting visual separation, watch what they are doing and interfere if something is not right.

I'm not a military helicopter pilot, but if there are three people in a military helicopter and even if the pilot is watching the ground due to flying low, wouldn't someone else have noticed the beacons and massive flood light of the oncoming plane? They are right next to Reagan, about to intersect the landing path, so if there was a time to be extra vigilant, this would be the time. It is possible someone at ground control made a terrible mistake, but it just seems hard to imagine the helicopter made no notice of the plane.
The internet basically solved this one the first day. They will of course have to make sure there wasn't anything else going on but it's pretty clear what happened:

ATC told the helo pilot about traffic. It's night, they only see lights--and they misidentified the traffic. They passed safely behind the plane in front of the plane they were supposed to pass behind. And they were at 400' when they shouldn't have been above 200'.

The automated systems on the planes can't be used that close to the airport (false alarms from all the planes on the ground--and, yes, I think that's a design flaw.) I don't know what ATC has, but we do know ATC knew about the situation and directed the helo to avoid the jet.

Why are we even talking about this...Trump has already stated that it is DEI....that it was teh controllers fault....a mentally deficient individual who got the job over a better qualified candidate. The NTSB doesn't need to investigate. His vice president has picked that up and moved forward with it. The reality is whatever our leaders tell us it is.

There is a TCAS system on planes but it isn't fully functional under 1,000 feet.; IT may warn "traffic" but it doesn't direct them to climb and descend at that altitude. The plane was literally just turning final and was a mile or less to the end of the runway The photo shows the approximate location of the CRJ. If everything had been normal, they would have passed within 200 feet. Far too close IMHO, but if the tower got warning every time that "normal" situation happened, the alarms would be disregarded. There will be changes at DCA. They may ban VIP helicopters around the airports.

But when our dear leader finds it necessary to blame someone while the dead pilots were still strapped in their seats in the river, then he drives the "investigation", especially among his acolytes. And for what it's worth....right wing media..."real" news, is actively soliciting conspiracy theories. The anchor of an OAN story was asking an aviation safety expert to share some of the things he had been hearing. Reporting conspiracy theories is spreading misinformation.

This pilot says it is VERY common to use that particular runway. It's done in order to handle more traffic.

I wonder if civilian air traffic control had complete domain over army operations.
They pretty much do. They talk on a different frequency, and while neither pilot can hear each other, the controller can hear both. And they would not let military fly willy nilly wherever they want to go.

Cheato looks to be blaming the crash on DEI.
What fucking retarded asswipe.
Was the chopper pilot an indigneous lesbian transwoman?
That's a conspiracy theory that it out there. What source did you use? Some have said it was a transgender pilot with gender dysphoria issues who hated Trump and may have hit it on purpose as a part of a transgender terror attack. Trump friendly news sources (I used OAN) had an anchor who was actively seeking conspiracy theories to spread. The comments had some about Trans. I posted that this was debunked. The free speech moderators at OAN deleted my response, but let the transgender conspiracy theory stay. But Trump gives them a wink and a nod by putting out a rash of his own theories, knowing that a shocking number of his followers will believe him.

Why has the Trump Administration not released the names of the under-qualified ATC personnel yet? At the very least I assume that they've been fired and replaced by some FOX news hosts by now. His supporters deserve to know whose houses to drive by and whose social media accounts to harass.

I heard that Hunter Biden's laptop was flying the chopper.

Obama signed the law that put DEI controllers with mental problems in their jobs in 2012. Trump COULD have repealed all that while he was ridding us of all of Obama's other accomplishments during his first term, but he didn't. That failure on his part would make him partially responsible though. But it was implemented in 2012 but that didn't keep Trump from boarding AF 1 for his weekly trips to Mar a Lago, and yes...those same mentally challenged controllers have been guiding his planes...AF1 or not...everywhere he flies. But again, it doesn't matter as Trump has spoken and cast the blame. Now it is up to teh NTSB to simply confirm what he said.

Well, that would certainly explain the tremendous, bigly uptick in fatal air crashes in the United States since 2012, now wouldn't it?

See, for example, the statistics in the following link, and citations therein:

One can only hope that some of those brain damaged ATC operators will be amongst those taking the early retirement offer and getting eight months of free money from our government.

Given that the vast majority of those accidents listed are 40, 50....some over 70 years old, odds are good those controllers are either long retired or dead. I remember the good old days in 1981 when Reagan fired pretty much ALL of teh controllers.

No, no, you don't understand. Since 2012, the ATC has hired mentally handicapped people and that's why the worst fatalities all happened since then. Are you saying that I'm supposed to believe that Trump got this wrong???

There were no DEI hires 40-70 years ago, and that's why there were no airline fatalities then, you see.

This is really quite simple. It's more like rocket science, not like the proverbial hosting of a weekend morning show.

Are you saying that I'm supposed to believe that Trump got this wrong???
IT doesn't matter. Trump's goal is to be like Kim in N Korea....He said he got 11 holes in one during one round of golf. And his people believe him. IF Trump said it, then it becomes a fact. And the fact is, that Trump is one lucky man to have been flying around in his own plane and AF 1 for 13 years...being guided by these psychologically disturbed controllers.

"Referring to DOGE's employees, Clinton said, "They have no relevant experience. Most of them aren't old enough to rent a car. And you're going to let them mess with airline safety that's already deteriorated on your watch?"

Duffy responded that Clinton needed to "sit this one out."

Clinton pointed out that there had not been a fatal commercial airline crash in the United States in 16 years. "Then MAGA fired the FAA chief, gutted the Aviation Security Advisory Committee, and threatened air traffic controllers with layoffs," Clinton said. "Now there have been two fatal crashes. Hope your unvetted 22-year-olds fix things fast."

I'm sure the right will tell Clinton to shut the hell up, but none of them has the balls to tell Trump the same damned thing. And he needs it more than anybody. I hope that the family of the female helicopter pilot sues Trump for inciting a flood of libelous comments about their daughter. She was dead and still strapped in her seat in a freezing river when he made the pronouncement that the accident was due to DEI beause...well...she's female. God one day I hope that he shows up to AF1 and a black female pilot greets him. Let him shit his diaper while he assumes she is a DEI hire, even though she may have a record as an ace fighter pilot in the Iraq war.

You think Pete Hegseth will keep black female pilots in the military? Hes probably hoping they quit after they stop celebrating black history month and Juneteenth.

Thanks to a russian spy and talkative american pilots in her car I now know that system (ADS-B) which basically prevents such collisions exist but was .... turned off on the helicopter.
She also confirmed my impression that pilot(s) were basically careless and paid no attention when they said they see the jet.
