ASHEVILLE, NC (FOX Carolina) - A local tow truck driver said he refused to tow a woman’s car after he saw Bernie Sanders stickers on the vehicle.

Kenneth Shupe said he was called to pick up a woman stranded on I-26 in Asheville on Monday.

When he saw “a bunch of Bernie Sanders stuff” he said he told the woman, “very politely,” that he could’t tow her car because she was “obviously a socialist” and advised her to “call the government” for a tow.

"Every business dealing in recent history with a socialist minded person I have not gotten paid," Shupe said. "Every time I deal with these people I get 'Berned' with an 'e' not a 'u'."

Shupe, who runs Shupee Max Towing in Travelers Rest, said he is a conservative Christian who supports Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump.

This woman had just been in an accident. Hence the need of a tow truck.

Heads up, friends.... Cass had a wreck in Asheville yesterday. She is fine, but the car was not driveable. We called our mechanic who was tied up in Easley at the time, so he sent ShupeeMax Towing to get her. Kenneth Shupee drove from Travelers Rest to Asheville, hooked up her car, and when he went around to the back, he came back and told her that he wouldn't tow her because she had a Bernie sticker on the back of the car. HE LEFT HER ON THE SIDE OF THE INTERSTATE IN NC, and DROVE AWAY.

It depends on who called. If she called the tow truck driver would take the car wherever she wanted assuming she paid the fee. It gets automatically taken to their lot if it's towed for being parked improperly or the like.

A South Carolina tow truck driver said God told him to leave a disabled Bernie Sanders supporter stranded along the interstate.

Cassy McWade was involved in a car crash near Asheville, North Carolina, and her family called their regular mechanic to drive 45 minutes north from his shop to haul her wrecked vehicle back for repairs, reported WHNS-TV.


Ken Shupe, owner of Shupee Max Towing, arrived about an hour later and began hooking McWade’s car up to his truck — until he spotted the Sanders campaign sticker on her bumper and the yard sign placed in her rear window.

“He goes around back and comes back and says, ‘I can’t tow you,'” McWade said. “My first instinct was there must be something wrong with the car, and he says, ‘No, you’re a Bernie supporter.’ And I was like, ‘Wait — really?’ And he says, ‘Yes ma’am,’ and just walks away.”

Shupe offered a supernatural explanation for his decision to leave the 25-year-old McWade, who suffers from arthritis and other health conditions, alongside I-26.

“Something came over me, I think the Lord came to me, and He just said, ‘Get in the truck and leave,'” Shupe said. “And when I got in my truck, you know, I was so proud, because I felt like I finally drew a line in the sand and stood up for what I believed.”

The North Carolina mountain people are pretty rabid. My brother works at Appalachian State. The physical plant is primarily staffed by locals. They openly proselytize at work, including supervisors. The head of grounds opens meetings with a prayer. University looks the other way because the physical plant is seen as a "make work" program for the locals. Anyway, these people are George Wallace Democrats to the core, which is to say that they are the base of the modern Republican Party thanks to the southern strategy.

They love Trump because they hate brown people and because they are mad that the furniture and textile manufacturing is all gone and Trumps protectionist anti-immigrant rhetoric resonates with them.

The irony that seems lost to them is that they rant about Bernie's socialism but then they want big government labor and trade protection. I guess that they just want to make sure that the goodies aren't going to the wrong sort of people.
