Yee haw, y'all!

Tell me again how support for Trump was about economics and not racism? Because anyone with more than two brain cells to rub together could have told you that the economic policies Trump was endorsing during the campaign would hurt farmers, yet most farmers voted for him.

It's almost as if all those people who said that they voted for Trump over economic concerns were either lying to themselves or lying to us. I'm betting it's the former.

It will be interesting to see how it plays out.

China intends to buy soybeans from us, just not as many.

Soybeans are a commodity and the Chinese need them. If they reduce the quantity they buy from us then they'll reduce the world supply from somewhere else. World demand for soy beans is going to remain about the same.

Soybean prices also depends on the production side, not just demand...

While soybean prices may be considered subdued across the world, the industry continues to grow and break records in both production and demand. There are also new emerging players in the soybean markets.
<snip>
The demand side of the equation for soybeans is very good. The problem is supply is even stronger, said Usset.

In China, they tariff American goods. In America, we tariff American company products assembled in part in China.

Why can't China grow it's own soybeans? Don't they have illegal immigrants and shit to work in the fields for them?

Isn't the Gobe desert growing? China doesn't have a lot of arable land.

They have an army. Just take some more land and conscript the population there as unpaid soybean farmers. This is a solvable problem.

China has 300 million farmers. They have other problems. 25% of their produce rots. They don't intelligently plant based on demand.

And they call themselves civilized. We do much better than that:

From Office of the Chief Economist, United States Department of Agriculture -
In the United States, food waste is estimated at between 30-40 percent of the food supply.

Any lower than that and our farmers will really start to complain.

In the US 5% of the food rots. Food waste is a broader category.

Yep. Big difference. It's why I hate letting my daughter take my ATM card to the grocery store. She'll spend $140 for food prepping and at least half of it will go to waste. It's what way too many people do.

If Americans ate 95% of what they buy, and ate only what their actual caloric needs were... sheeeeit. U.S. farmers would go broke in a month.

Not quite farming but Harley is gearing up to move EU bound production to the EU, to deal with FFvC's temper tantrums on trade...
https://heisenbergreport.com/2018/0...s-harley-davidson-moves-production-to-europe/
Harley is now moving production offshore. To wit, from a Monday (SEC) morning filing: "Harley-Davidson maintains a strong commitment to U.S.-based manufacturing which is valued by riders globally. Increasing international production to alleviate the EU tariff burden is not the company’s preference, but represents the only sustainable option to make its motorcycles accessible to customers in the EU and maintain a viable business in Europe. Europe is a critical market for Harley-Davidson. In 2017, nearly 40,000 riders bought new Harley-Davidson motorcycles in Europe, and the revenue generated from the EU countries is second only to the U.S."

Can't argue with Harley. Trumpy is attempting to run the country like it's his.

And this is toothpaste stuff. Once it is moved, it could be hard to move it back.

Trying to act like an isolationist in a global economy, while trying to remain a leader in global trade is perhaps one of the dumbest ideas a President has ever had.

I don't often agree with Lindsey Graham but when he called Trump's idea of entering into an agreement with Putin to guarantee free and fair elections, I think that was much dumber.

Of course, Trumpy was just gushing all he could about Brudda Vlad so he could make more money in Russia hosting all those oligarchs in his towers.

Tariffs are not in and of themselves a bad thing. We used to use them to protect manufacturing jobs.

But Trump is a screaming moron who doesn't know what he's doing, so it should be no surprise to anyone that his implementation of tariffs is making things worse instead of better.

The point of tariffs is to make sure that American factory workers don't have to compete against factories in countries where people make pennies per day. So you slap tariffs on things to exactly cancel out the difference in labor costs so that you can protect jobs that are here.

But if you put tariffs on countries that have similar or higher labor costs, or raise tariffs on goods whose factories already left the country, then what exactly are your tariffs going to accomplish except to start a trade war?

Anyone with two brain cells to rub together could have predicted this outcome, which is why it's so much fun to watch all of those Trump voters lose their jobs and businesses as a result of their own votes.

MAGA!

America’s Biggest Nail Producer Is Getting Hammered By Trump Tariffs

Republicans can put a stop to this any time they want. But they won’t, even though they support free trade. This is how much they’re in thrall to Donald Trump. They won’t buck him even when (a) they disagree with him, (b) most of the public disagrees with him, and (c) his policies are causing pain to their own constituents. It kinda makes you wonder what the point of even having a Republican Party is these days.

Trump tariffs raw goods American companies need to build things with, making their costs go up. Then he tariffs American corporation products produced in China.

Very much so. The competition between the US and Canada/EU is relatively even.

FFvC and the Repugs are both pretty much Dotards on this topic. German companies don't have to worry about health insurance for their employees. Their employees don't start at Daimler with massive debt coming out of college. And in the US, instead of spending federal dollars on UHC and infrastructure, we pay for a massive military-complex, PTSD, and artificial limbs. Maybe, first we should fix our own house instead of blaming others for how fucked up we are...
