Not illegal but there is the potential conflict of interest that this lawyer represented
the specific Russians who are named in the investigation. Moreover the fact that Trump can't even hire a lawyer who doesn't have a Russian connection really is incredible.
In much the same way that someone facing a racial discrimination lawsuit being represented by a lawyer who is an active Klan member would be. Sure it's not illegal - but it's a bit on the nose.
