About time. There's no such thing as blasphemy, as there are no gods......

There’s not much that Democrats and Republicans in the Senate can agree on these days, but both parties ought to condemn countries that punish people for saying unpopular things. And now a bipartisan resolution has been introduced that does just that.

This week, Senators James Lankford (R-OK) and Chris Coons (D-DE) introduced a resolution that calls for the “global repeal of blasphemy, heresy, and apostasy laws.”

Blasphemy laws are pointless, regardless of the fact that there are no gods.

If any gods existed, and were offended by something a human said or did, they would be perfectly capable of meting out appropriate punishment without the assistance of human laws or institutions.

And of course, given that they don't exist, they are incapable of being offended.

There is no set of premises by which one could soundly conclude that blasphemy should be punished by humans.

Of course, logic doesn't play much part in the decision making process for the religious, or they wouldn't be religious. But even by their own standards, blasphemy laws are nonsensical.
