A little before dawn, some adventurers, for lack of a better word, departed from Colombia in speedboats and landed on a beach in Macuto, about an hour's drive north of Caracas, the nation's capital. Six of them were killed and 13 of them were arrested by the nation's military and special police forces. Two of the arrested ones were former US soldiers, Luke Denman and Airan Berry. Venezuela TV showed what is purportedly a confession. From the BBC:
From Al Jazeera about JG:In Wednesday's video, Mr Denman, 34, appeared to explain that he was hired to train Venezuelans in Colombia before returning to Caracas and taking control of an airport to allow Mr Maduro to be taken out of the country.
"I was helping Venezuelans take back control of their country," Mr Denman, a former special operations forces member, is seen as saying.
Mr Denman said he and Airan Berry, 41, were contracted by Jordan Goudreau, an American military veteran who leads a Florida-based Silvercorp USA firm, to carry out the operation.
For his part, opposition leader Juan Guaidó denies any involvement in this coup attempt. He said he was working with two US citizens in an operation designed to capture, not kill, Maduro and "liberate" Venezuela.
Goudreau said he had organised the raid on a "shoestring budget" after signing an agreement with the US-backed Guaido, whom Goudreau accuses of failing to pay him.

Saab also showed an alleged contract that said SilverCorp USA had a $212m agreement with Guaido using funds "stolen" from state oil company PDVSA, whose US subsidiary, Citgo, was put under the opposition leader's control.
Trump also denies involvement."They're trying to create a state of apparent confusion, an effort to hide what's happening in Venezuela," Guaido said, citing local issues - such as petrol shortages, a deadly prison riot and a violent gang battle - in a country that has been gripped by deepening social, political and economic crises.
