US rent moratorium expired

Renters Rising on Twitter: "“Don’t believe the hype!”

Last night, we were with @MondaireJones and @AOC as they urged the public to pressure the White House to extend the eviction moratorium, in addition to calling on Congress to reconvene for a legislative fix. ☎️ (phone number)" / Twitter

Mondaire Jones, with AOC, said that the President has the authority to extend the rent moratorium.

Congresswoman Cori Bush on Twitter: "I urge President Biden to extend relief to our neighbors who right now face eviction. Our sole focus must be keeping people housed and we must do so with the urgency this moment deserves. (link to screencap of more details)" / Twitter

Mondaire Jones on Twitter: "Call @POTUS and tell him to #ExtendTheMoratorium. ☎️ (phone number)" / Twitter

Maxine Waters on Twitter: "I don't buy that the CDC can't extend the eviction moratorium - something it has already done in the past! Who is going to stop them? Who is going to penalize them? There is no official ruling saying that they cannot extend this moratorium. C'mon CDC - have a heart! Just do it!" / Twitter

Joseph Zeballos-Roig on Twitter: ".@AOC argued WH should build new legal case citing surge of Delta variant infections and slow pace of rental $ getting out — and take it to high court:

"Even if it gets struck down, we need the administration to buy Congress time" for renewal, she said (link)" / Twitter

Cori Bush on Twitter: "Grateful. (pic link)" / Twitter - with MJ, AOC, and Rep. Jimmy Gomez

Their activism has borne fruit.

Glad to hear this. I hope they can make haste to distribute the COVID funds that were intended for these needy Americans.

The Biden administration will announce a new 60-day eviction moratorium that would protect areas where 90% of the U.S. population lives, according to three people familiar with the plans who insisted on anonymity to discuss the forthcoming announcement.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has identified a legal authority for a new and different moratorium that would be for areas with high and substantial increases in COVID-19 infections.

So basically ruling by decree and ignoring pesky things such as the rule of law or private property rights. All so that deadbeats can continue to freeload without paying rent. Disgusting! Biden was elected as a moderate. But instead of governing like one, he is giving in to the socialist Squad time after time.

And we all know what will happen after 60 days. Thrice-evicted Cori Bush and AOC will complain again, saying that Biden should unilaterally extend the moratorium again. Rinse, repeat, indefinitely.

Agreed! But I'd only give covid funds to people who can demonstrate that they are vaccinated.

If we are to survive as a nation there must be rule of law and the protection of private property. Regardless whether you agree or not with evictions for deadbeats....the entire issue should be handled differently. If Democrats think compassion should be handed out, then they should fight for rent vouchers rather than justifying taking away property rights of landlords.

If we as a society feel that squatters should continue without paying rent, then let all of society (tax payers) be responsible for these people. That is the only right way to do this without the destruction of rule of law.

Well, it seems to be okay to give money to big business so they can lay people off and buy back their stocks, but giving money to people that have been lock-down-ed out of work, so they can pay rent, seems to be socialism, and is Teh Bad.

Yes, the rights of the property owners, the rights of the anti-vaxxers.

It is unfortunate that the anti-vaxxers helped prolong this pandemic making this an issue.

This kind of conflicts with the whole, 'you got vaccinated so why does it matter what someone else does'. Well, this is what matters. Herd immunity would get the economy opened up, no more need for eviction moratoriums.

Activists are taking a victory lap.

After her fumbling and hand-wringing, she doesn't deserve any credit.

CB's activism got some criticism in the mainstream news media:

Editorial: Cori Bush's antics generate publicity, but they won't change political reality | Editorial | stltoday.com
St. Louis Post Dispatch, in her district or near it.
Democratic Rep. Cori Bush of St. Louis has been sleeping out in front of the Capitol building since Friday night to protest the expiration of a federal eviction moratorium. She is generating a lot of headlines but not necessarily for the right reasons, mainly because she clearly misunderstands the complicated process required to restore the moratorium. As with many progressive ideals, righteous-sounding aspirations never seem to take into account political reality.

AOC responded:
Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez on Twitter: "Donkey of the day material" / Twitter

I agree. Activist movements have been an important part of social change.

Revolutionary activists in colonial days, antislavery activists, labor activists, feminist activists, environmentalist activists, civil-rights activists, ...

The money for landlords is there, given to the states. My ex the landlord has taken advantage of the program. Her tenant, our daughter as been urged by the state to do so again. But this is CA where they take care of their people.
Just for fun I checked it out myself, started at the Dept of Treasury and followed the program down to Birmingham AL, after a couple more links, my end result for this assistance was a blank page. Shocking, I know.

Both you and Keith are missing the point. There are degrees of socialism, I'm fine with that. The part that is unacceptable is the lack of rule of law and respect for private property. After you get rid of the small fry landlords, who will you target next? Perhaps make it legal for the squatters to move into your house with your family?

What, that if Americans took the pandemic seriously, we wouldn't be worrying at all about eviction moratoriums, as the Covid-19 cases should have been low enough to be close to normal? Or do you have some sort of political spin here?

There are degrees of socialism, I'm fine with that.
What, each tenet of socialism is six steps from Kevin Bacon? Let's see...
1) Right of workers to collectively bargain
2) Do this via unions
3) Kevin Bacon is in a union.

Yup, that checks.
The part that is unacceptable is the lack of rule of law and respect for private property.
Well, this falls on the assholes who didn't get vaccinated and/or helped spread the disease which has prolonged the medical emergency in the country. It is quite unfortunate for the landlords as having tenants that are not paying isn't conducive to their business model at all. And of course, there is funding that is slowly, if at all, moving out to renters for assistance. Some states, often red, are very slow in providing this. So, the Feds tried to make it right, and didn't just seize people's property.
After you get rid of the small fry landlords, who will you target next?
According to my Karl Marx 3.0 Manual titled "Faking a Pandemic to Steal America", the strip malls are next.
Perhaps make it legal for the squatters to move into your house with your family?
Not the squatters!

Setting aside that the CDC diktat is illegal, there shouldn't be a moratorium. Seems like an unconstitutional taking. If there really is concern, then make funds available to those legitimately in need. This looks like a high-low tag team against the middle.

The funds are there, billions for the asking.

States are sitting on the money, hoping for things to fade away and then just keep the money. "In chaos, you can steal."

So don’t punish the landlords.

The money is ultimately for the landlords.

Not this landlord. No help for the small fry landlord in Missouri. No help for a lot of other landlords mentioned in OP either.

Trausti is exactly right. And most interesting of all is that it's the Democrats who seem to be in favor of further wiping out the middle class.

How else to explain their bending over backwards to apologize for the violation of rule of law? People can be poor and they can be rich without violence. It is when the government steps in to create unfair conditions when the public becomes ripe for revolution.
