Time: Vatican Reveals It Punished Thousands of Priests For Sex Abuse
http://time.com/89662/vatican-defrocked-sexual-abuse/

The Vatican's ambassador released comprehensive figures during the second day of grilling by a U.N. committee that monitors an international convention against torture, claiming to have defrocked hundreds and sanctioned thousands of priests in the last decade

:joy:

I just don't think this is something to celebrate.
Whether they covered up the crime and transferred the priests, or covered up the crime and punished the priests, they still took it upon themselves to decide what to do about broken laws and piddle-poor moral behavior. Their arrogant decision that only they can take these actions remains at the heart of the issue.

Celebrate when they decide that secular crimes are something for secular authorities to prosecute and turn thousands of priests over to the cops.

All of this would have some validity if they can show where the information was turned over to the relevant prosecutors.

I'd love a redesign, but on my budget it's just more feasible to develop some unsavory fetishes...

ETA: Holy CRAP why is the board putting replies in random threads?

That's good. It means that the Church once again admits it knowingly partook in covering up crimes. They had information about criminal activities on the part of their members and handled it through an internal process as opposed to alerting the authorities. File charges under RICO laws, or whatever the equivalent are in the various countries and seize all the Church's assets due to their involvement in a criminal conspiracy.

an international convention against torture has been investigating whether the Vatican’s senior officials are liable for the abuses

Well, Francis assumed responsibility for all of it so they should talk to him about it.

Francis was not involved in the cover-up, but JPII(the saint!) and Benedict (the hiding one) were... The first one is dead but the other idiot is alive...

If the current church (including pope Francis) had any moral decency or real concern for child rape, they would not have just sainted JPII who helped the cover-up for decades, or be completely silent on the many diocese currently hiding their wealth and declaring bankruptcy to avoid having to pay the therapy bills for the many thousands of rape victims whose lives they destroyed. The fact that the media is virtually silent on the continuing heinous crimes against humanity by the Church and joined in with uncritical voices of praise of JPII was sainted shows just how much of a stranglehold religion still has on the public discourse regarding moral issues.

I searched online for an answer to the logical question: where did these pedophiles go, but couldn't find an answer.

Were their records handed over to police so they could be followed? Were they sent to a comfy Catholic recluse somewhere? Or did they kiss Francis' ring, ask for forgiveness and then were released into the general population to continue their pedophilic ways?

The bishop Fernando Karadima case.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Karadima_case

In April 2010 a civil criminal complaint was filed by victims of sexual abuse by four men who were once devoted followers of Karadima. The Public Ministry, or attorney general's office, named special prosecutor Xavier Armendáriz. He stated that "The law will not show favoritism. The office of the accused will not influence this investigation," although the fact that the prosecutor made the disclaimer is evidence that Chileans expect the opposite. After seven months of conducting the probe, the claims were dismissed by the court ruling that there was not enough evidence to charge him.

One of the claimants accused: "We would have liked to appeal, but with defense attorneys like his, who have the Appeals and Supreme Court eating out of their hands, and a number of powerful people who continue to protect Karadima, we knew it would be an uphill battle that we were likely to lose,"

The root of the problem.
Two thousand years this church 'tradition' has been countenanced and concealed. And you can bet as soon as people become distracted by other causes, these practices will continue.
Can the leopard change its spots? Will they do good who are so long accustomed to the doing, and the excusing of their evils?

And their wrists are really sore from being slapped.

Eldarion Lathria

As per Biblical instructions. Right amongst the part where it tells you to stone homosexuals and burn witches, it clearly commands "And if a man doest rape a young child, thou shalt give him a stern talking to".

don't forget the next sentence "And then thou shalt hide this man among a new flock, so that he might not ever be truly punished and so he may find new and fresh unwilling holes to bugger."
