Discussion about video games in general. Fallout 4 is likely to be announced by Bethesda tomorrow.

I've heard good things about the Fallout games but I've never been able to play any of them because I've been living with roommates who hog the TV for the last four or five years. Which one would you say is the best?

For me, Fallout 3 is the best of them. New Vegas a close second. They'd probably be about equal, but 3 was the first of the series I played, so it had thatfreshness factor, that thrill of something new.

I probably won't be buying 4 on launch, though, as I have already built up a backlog of games I've bought and/or installed - ACIV, The Witcher2, most of Saints Row IV - but have yet to play. By the time I get through those, hopefully F4 will be on sale at Steam for a knockdown price. But before I even get started on them, there's the small matter of my current playthrough of Oblivion (again!) that I started the other week ...

It's about damn time, everyone knows they've been working on Fallout 4 for years. The rumors I have heard is that it will be based around Cambridge, Mass. with a connection to MIT and an AI project that was alluded to in previous games.

As far as previous Fallout games go, they are all great games, with the exception of Fallout Tactics. Fallout 1 & 2 are top down isometric games from the '90s, and I don't think you can get them for consoles. They blended tactical turn based combat and RPG style play. Fallout Tactics was much the same, though much of the RPG elements were stripped out as it's focus was intended to be multiplayer, but it was an incomplete and bug ridden mess that was rushed out the door to meet deadlines, and never fully patched. Fallout 3 and New Vegas made the switch to FPS, with some features that allowed us old timers to use turn based mechanics in combat, and were the first to target consoles as well as PCs. They are all ultimately based on a PC game from the '80s, Wasteland, which was a notoriously difficult, but rewarding game, years ahead of it's time. Wasteland 2 came out a year or two ago, and it went retro with top down isometric turn based tactical combat like the original games. It is a great game as well, and can be picked up on Steam. I think it may be available on consoles as well, and is definitely worth picking up.

People are already complaining about the dated graphics, but I never know if people are talking about graphics (as in technical specifications) or art direction when they make such comments.

I like what's shown in the video in terms of art direction at least. A lot of games I've played within the last decade have opted for more muted, realistic, grittier colour palettes, which makes sense for a post apocalyptic game, but I'm ready for a return to more fantastical visuals. It matches the sort of colour pops you'd get in old colourized photos from the malt shop era. I liked New Vegas, but I'll admit when I saw the Mojave I felt a bit burned out on seeing a colour palette and visuals which were too close to Fallout 3 (though some variety was added). I don't need the core gameplay mechanics to radically change for this iteration, but I do want to feel like I am exploring new areas.

So, I'm excited. There haven't been a lot of games I've been that into lately, and I'm not sure if E3 will mostly just talk about games I've been aware of for quite some time, but just haven't been able to play due to long development times or stalled out release dates. While the Fallout 4 announcement was expected, it's nice to definitively add a game to the list of things I'm looking forward to playing in the future

XCOM 2 was also announced. I'll be killing xenos instead of sleeping when November rolls around.

I've played FO3 and New Vegas, loved them both. I also liked the DLCs, though I liked the New Vegas ones more. Have already pre-ordered FO4.

E3 starts tonight! Looking forward to news about Dishonored 2, which is rumored to exist.

Anyone watch the Bethesda presentation for Fallout 4? It was awesome. They made crafting amazing, pretty much any item in the game can be used for parts for crafting. Multiple paths for building gear. Weapon & armor customization. Build your own settlement and make defenses to keep raiders, etc. out of it. Coming November 10. Can't wait.

Gotta get my Pipboy edition.

Anyone playing World of Warships now that it's gone into open beta? It's pretty awesome. Needs more anthromorphized warships, but otherwise I'm enjoying it.

Holy shit! I used to think I was a true video game nerd, until I watched some dude beat and battle his way to Mike Tyson while he was blindfolded in the original game Punch Out.

In case there are any non-gamers reading this thread and wondering why Fallout fans gush about the phrase "War. War never changes," here is the intro movie from Fallout 1:

That line is used in the narration of every game. If you want, you can dig up the intro movie for Fallout 2, but be warned that it contains spoilers about Fallout 1.

I played the hell out of the original, but never finished it, and never played Warband. My gaming rig at the time was barely able to handle the original with turned down GFX. Now that I have a brand new gaming rig, I may have to give this one a try. Of course I have a ton of games from the Steam Summer Sale that I have to still burn through, and a few titles that I absolutely have to get coming out this fall (X-COM 2, Fallout 4, Shadowrun: Hong Kong), and I just don't have as much time for gaming as I used to.

Just got MKX. It's awesome. Especially like playing as Johnny Cage because you get to punch people in the nuts.
