Britain has always been stuffy. Of all the places on the planet I would rather not be, Britain takes the cake. It has always been a land of overlords who think the rest of the world owes them a living and they deserve to dictate social and sexual conditions. Considering their Prime Minister and Queen, they really are an odd bunch who attempt to rule Britiain. In some countries, "English Culture" is another word for BDSM. So now they are trying to outlaw THEIR OWN CULTURE.

Harmless acts of nonconformity have always been treated harshly by autocrats (unless it is in their own protected little bedrooms). In California, we had a state senator who wrote a law against sexually molesting children. Within four years of the law being passed he found himself in jail for violating the law he wrote. All these blue laws need to be confronted openly and massively. The human race is 100% perverted as soon as you peek past the bedroom door. We need to be a lot more honest about the nature of the human being and quit persecuting it for bullshit authoritarian and often religious reasons.

Now I am not in any way condoning the actions of the state senator mentioned above, but for consenting adults blue laws are just excuses for government to step in and practice its own special form of sadism. These folks face sitting in front of Parliament were't hurting anybody. But definitely what goes on inside Parliament hurts many.

Conservative party is being threatened by UKIP - a more right wing, anti-immigration, anti-european party that is stealing their core supporters, and thus contributing to the their likely defeat at the next election. So they're desperately looking for something to shorn up those same supporters - and this is a cheap bone to throw them, since most of the BSDM scene wouldn't be voting conservative anyway.

It's also worth pointing out that although porn laws are reasonably strict in the UK, the attitude to the BSDM scene is a lot more relaxed than in the US, just as it is in much of Europe.

I've heard of UKIP of course; afaik they're basically the British PVV (Geert Wilders' party). I wouldn't imagine that the kind of people who'd switch to UKIP would particularly welcome this kind of anti-porn law though, so I'm a bit confused as to why the conservative party would try to court them back with this. Unless they're trying to court a different group of (religious?) conservatives who otherwise vote on other (smaller?) parties? Surely those numbers can't be high enough to risk alienating the remainder of their conservative base who can't all be pro-censorship?

That's exactly why it's so bizarre to me. If a conservative party here in the Netherlands would try this, it would only accelerate the decay of their base, not slow or stop it.

It works that way in most of Europe. If an established party starts coopting the extreme-right theses, it lends credibility to those theses, and the extreme-right party can shout "we were first, we are the real ones". So this kind of short-term thinking is just shooting oneself in the foot for established parties.
Here in France, we can see it with the rise of Front National while established parties discuss "threat to our culture and identity" and silly things like that.

I suppose the Tories can get away with it because UKIP is still small and extreme enough. When it tries to look more respectable, like Front National does here, it will come back to bite them in the ass.

Why on earth would they be recognized as such? Once you start assigning rights to "peoples" instead of to "people", you've thrown all intellectual and moral basis for treating people equally down the garbage chute, so where the bejesus would you find any reason for treating different "peoples" equally?
