What do you say to a conservative Muslim colleague when you find his culture ridiculous?

'The veiling of women is both a cause and an effect of misogyny.' Veiling by women is an effect of choice. What business is it of yours to lay down the law?

When did I lay down the law? Did I claim that the government should go around yanking veils off women?

Since when does making a claim about the effects of something mean I am also claiming I want the state to ban it by force?

Do you know the difference between the sentences

'The veiling of women is both a cause and effect of misogyny' and 'Women should be prevented by the State from veiling themselves'???

Like most male chauvinist nutters, you deny that women have free will, as you know. Your contempt for them is disgusting.

Just an observation regarding stag and hen nights (or bachelor and bachelorette parties as we call them in the States). These are NOT gender segregated activities, at least none of the bachelor parties I have attended were gender segregated. They typically end up at strip club, where there are quite a few definitely non-veiled women. I understand that bachelorette parties often end up at a Chippendale's review (or something similar), and though I have never attended one, I have witnessed several bachelorette parties at bars that were also not gender segregated.

Just because the bride and her wedding party are generally not allowed at bachelor parties, and the groom and his wedding party are generally not allowed at bachelorette parties does not make them gender segregated.

To claim that women in countries such as Saudi Arabia have a choice about whether or not to wear a veil is incorrect. They are not free to go about unveiled in public without serious and severe legal and social sanctions and penalties.

You are correct that in many Muslim countries and indeed, many Muslim women in non Muslim countries voluntarily are veiled or wear a hijab. For some it is a genuine choice. For others, the penalties for failing to follow the tradition mandated by their particular culture make that choice rather meaningless.

Well, that just takes the cake for the most ridiculous statement in this thread.

The same thing I say to a conservative Christian colleague when I find his culture ridiculous. Nothing.

Because in the US there is such a thing as religious discrimination in the workplace, I think it is best not to go anywhere near the issue in the workplace [for me].

You're right - Saudi Arabia, like Afghanistan, is ruled by a very nasty sexist regime backed by the US.
