I see a lot of advocacy of self-defense and open carry from corners of the internets. For example, recently a teen was stopped in Aurora, Co while advocating open carry by walking with his shotgun.

My thought experiment is what if this teen was say Trayvon Martin back* in his neighborhood in Florida, or an Any St., U.S.A. Would this be handled differently? Would the gun advocates stand up for the right of Trayvon to carry or use him as a reason why we need open carry?

Discuss.

*Yes I said "back" not "Black"... you read it wrong... BURN SAUCE! BTW: Trayvon is Black. Not saying race might be an additional factor as "Black teen walking" is only a daily call to 911 in many parts of America.

the same thing that did happen when Huey Newton did open carry in Oakland.

Gun control laws and fast.

This is kind of interesting. From what I understand from my gun nut friends is that concealed carry is booming. Would it be better to have them open carry rather than conceal it?

So we are way off topic then.
I was merely replying directly to Athena, who brought the terrorist Huey Newton into the discussion comparing a hypothetical open carrying Trayvon Martin to Huey Newton.

By the way, what's with some people pronouncing Trayvon in that faux-French way? Tray-von.

I think Trayvon would be alive today because I don't believe Zimmerman would have had the balls to approach him if he saw Trayvon with a weapon.

Ah, now that's the kind of tangent you can expect a guy to take when he's got some faint fucking clue what he's talking about.
I figured if the the squirrel wanted a tangent I'd give him a good one. :)
But since you seem to think you have a "faint fucking clue" about pronunciation of St. Trayvon's name, care to explain the pronunciation? To me the way his mother for example says Tray-von sounds like this silly Sprint commercial where a goth kid named Gordon insists it's pronounced Gord-on.

is that were you doing? news to me. I provided what actually happened and what was relevant.

You did not do that.

As usual.

Are you saying he wasn't killed by members of a Black Panthers splinter group? Because that's what his wikipedia page, linked to upthread, says.

As to it being relevant to open carry, "live by the gun, die by the gun".

St. Trayvon's name

Sorry, were you going to argue that he was some sort of highly trained master criminal who hunted down innocent neighborhood watchmen?

And you do know that this is a thread on open carry?

I can't tell if you're honestly unable to figure out what I said or if you're fucking with me.

You do realize the topic of the OP was about blacks open carrying weapons (please remember the person brought was considered a dangerous threat without ever having a weapon) and you swerve to talk about black panthers and shit. That is a derail. Granted, you didn't decide to swerve more about a woman who got away with murder with a gun, so you could be given a little credit, but not much.

Athena mentioned a particular black man who was open carrying weapons who got gunned down by other black men who may or may not have been open carrying. You don't find that detail of his life relevant? And remember, it was Athena, not I, who chose to include Huey Newton.

The way I would pronounce it in my native language (French) would be Trevon without that "Tray-von". And since when phonetic pronunciation in French is supposed to be with a pause in between syllables? Not that it has anything to do with the OP intent but I cannot help but be puzzled as to why the term "French" popped up in your off topic comment.

Going back to the actual OP directed topic : if Trayvon had been carrying a shotgun, IMO it would have fueled even more Zimmerman's highly subjective perception that he "was up to no good" and one of those "punks who get away". Mind you that his initial perception of Trayvon being a threat was based on PURE speculation. The way he was walking, the way he was allegedly "checking houses", the way Zimmerman perceived him as "being on drugs or something" Add to all those highly subjective perceptions, Zimmerman seeing a shotgun carried by Trayvon. When subjectively induced profiling has already been established (which is exactly what Zimmerman did), the sight of a weapon carried by the profiled individual can only result in justifying/rationalizing the initial perception of "up to no good" and the etc...duly documented in the 911 recording.
