What TV are you watching and how would you rate it? [Revive from FRDB]

After Life, 8/10; Netflix series written and starring Ricky Gervais as a grieving, recently widowed "journalist". Following the death of his wife of 20+ years Tony has given up on life, becoming depressed and suicidal and basically not giving a fuck. His behavior is rude, erratic and sometimes dangerous as he just goes about not giving a shit for consequences. Along the way he is befriended by a widow who nudges him along to start trying to care a bit. I binge watched the whole series and it's a mixture of comedy and poignant drama. Worth a watch.

You - 8/10

Do you remember watching the final episode of Gossip Girl and after all the revelations and history was summed up, your reaction was "OK, I am fairly sure that this dude is a serial killer and Serena's head is definitely going to end up on a shelf in his basement"?

This show is pretty much a sequel to Gossip Girl where that was the case. It has the same lead actor and takes the creepy stalkerish aspects of Gossip Girl while removing the lighthearted romantic comedy parts and replacing them with more of a "bashing people over the head with a mallet and then murdering them in your basement dungeon" type of vibe. It has the same tone as Dexter where everything is done from the perspective of the serial killer and you understand his motivations and why he's targeting who he's targeting and the victims are fairly douchey, so you kind of cheer for the guy while he's setting them up for the kill.

It's a cool psychological thriller on Netflix with well written characters and good acting. Worth seeing.

The Good Place, 7/10; Comedy series on Netflix starring Ted Danson as the architect of "The Good Place", a place for people in the afterlife. The series centers around Eleanor who was not a particularly good person when alive and she realized that she should not be in "The Good Place" but she wants to stay, she certainly doesn't want to be sent to "The Bad Place". It's a mildly amusing series, nothing laugh out loud funny, a bit "fluffy" but is worth a watch.

The Expanse - Season Three: This thing just keeps... expanding in scope. It can go just about anywhere from here... either continuing to be a great Sci-Fi program or jump a space shark.

My wife and I enjoyed the first season--I recognize it as creative television.

Then at the end of the first season came The Big Twist™, and we lost interest midway through Season Two.

The books expand in scope, too, and if the showrunner doesn't do something stupid, it should continue to be excellent.

Love, Death, and Robots 9/10

An anthology on Netflix, each episode is an animation around 10-20 minutes long. A variety of styles, and often mature subject matter. (nudity and violence) There is no overall setting or story linking them.

We burned through all 18 episodes last night, and I don't think there was a bad episode among them.

Keeping Up With The Kardashians, 0/10; This show has been on TV for 12 years and I've never watched until I was flicking through the channels and out of curiosity I tuned in. I couldn't watch for more than a few minutes at a time but tuned in and out several times over the weekend and I came away hating these pigs and wondering, who is watching this crap, why are they watching and what do these pigs do for a living ? It is mindless drivel. I don't understand how this show is on TV and why anyone would watch it. It wasn't even bad in a train wreck curiosity way.

Teenage girls. It's made for teenage girls. It's not made for you. Teenage girls are interested in the struggles of being pretty, popular and having a perfect surface. This is like complaining that super hero movies are predictable. Teenage boys want mature men making displays showing great power.

Finished Babylon 5 again. Show holds up time and time again.

Trying to start Farscape up again, made it 10 or so episodes the first time. Don't know if it'll be like B5, where Season One is laying the necessary groundwork and then KABOOM! (well... literally).

But at least the Marvel movies have a plot. "Reality" programming is the worst thing to happen to television since ever. Better than YouTube though... which is destroying comedy as we know it.

Until Scorpius turns up, the show is a lot of work.

I loved Babylon 5. So much so that I bid in a charity auction held by Claudia Christian (Ivanova) a couple years ago and won a Skype chat with her. We talked about everything except B5, and she was super nice. I've traded a couple emails with her since. We share the same birthday. She's an advocate for Naltrexone as a treatment for alcohol use disorder, and if you reach out to her, she will respond. That's cool.

I watched most of Farscape, and liked it well enough, but I could never quite get past the (for lack of a better term) Muppets. They worked for incidental aliens in the show, but as main characters? Not so much.

Nice! I met Patricia Tallman (Lyta Alexander) at a convention, and got her book “Pleasure Threshholds”. Amazing fact, she was also a stunt woman on Star Trek TNG

Dealing with other women slagging you off and disrespecting you is a plot. Being the queen means everybody is out to get you. That's teenage girl reality. Excitement.

You must have watched it way more than I did because I didn't see anything in The Kardashians that was of interest. Most of the time they were picking at food talking about stuff of no interest and coming across as dumb. The viewing figures must be pretty low. One of them will have to release a sex tape soon.

Didn't they make a fortune from the show? Isn't that why they have money now? Ratings might be low now at Season 15... WTF?!..., but it got to Season 15 and it was a hit for E!.

I have never seen it. My knowledge is based on the people I know who do watch it and think it's great. They're all very young girls.

Larry Charles' Dangerous World of Comedy

Here's a great one. 10/10

It's about home-grown comedians working in the most dangerous places. It's not so much about their humour. I would have liked it more. But it's still interesting. It's about their lives and lifestyles and how it is to work in comedy there. I've only seen the first episodes. It's about Iraq, Liberia and soldier comedians.

AXS TV has some decent music coverage and a program I like to watch from time to time is the "Classic Albums" segment. I caught the "Never Mind The Bollocks" album by the Sex Pistols. Very funny.

AXS TV Trailer/

I don't know when this was originally filmed but it's a great story about one of the UK's most iconic and culture shifting bands and how they recorded the album despite numerous set backs. None of these setbacks was caused by their lack of ability to play their instruments. The album was released a little bit before my time but by god, these guys (and there were others in the punk movement) knew how to piss off the establishment.
